British forces have killed three militants in Iraq after coming under fire during an arrest operation.
The troops were attacked with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades in the southern city of Basra, the Ministry of Defence said.
Four people were arrested and weapons seized in the multi-national raid in the early hours of the morning.
The MoD said the attackers were "successfully engaged", and that there were no British casualties.
'Clear sight'
An MoD spokesman said: "In the early hours of this morning British troops undertook an arrest operation where a number of people were detained and a number of weapons were seized.
"As they were leaving the location they came under rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire.
"They had clear sight and successfully engaged them. There were no British casualties."
British army spokesman in Basra, Maj David Gell, said the patrol was hit by indirect fire at about 0530 local time.
"We, in self-defence, hit them and believe we killed the three males," he said.
UK forces were back at base by 0645.
British and Iraqi troops have come under increasing attack after the leader of the Mehdi Army militia, Abu Qadir, also know as Wissam Waili, was killed in Basra on 25 May.
