Scientists breed cows that give skimmed milk [...Is chocolate next?]
Times Online UK ^ | May 27, 2007 | Jonathan Leake, Science Editor

SCIENTISTS have bred cows that produce skimmed milk and hope to establish herds of the cattle to meet the demands of health-conscious consumers.

The milk is also high in omega3 oils, claimed to improve brain power, and contains polyunsaturated fat. The saturated fats found in normal milk are linked to increased risk of heart disease. The cows, which have a particular genetic mutation, were bred from a single female discovered by researchers when they screened milk from millions of cattle in New Zealand.

Butter from these cows has the extra advantage of being spreadable straight from the fridge, like margarine.

I thought this was sarcasm till I looked at the link. This is useless. Skim milk sells for the same price per gallon as whole milk, while the cream and butter and cheese that a normal cow can sell for a dis-proportionally higher price per pound.

Chalk this one up to why--no matter how hard humans may try--God's still going to be better at generating life.

Years ago they were talking about splicing a spider gene into a cow. The idea is the cow would produce the protein for the spider silk in it’s milk.

Spider silk is supposed to be stronger than steel but not practical for commercial use due to the limits on what can be harvested.

They say it’s perfectly safe. Even so whenever I hear a “moo” I duck and run, just in case...

What does price have to do with anything? This cow and her offspring are producing healthier milk.

SCIENTISTS have bred cows that produce skimmed milk...

...The milk is also high in omega3 oils

Pay no attention to the details ping.

If the cows are frozen perhaps they will produce soft serve ice cream. Yeah, I know. Udderly ridiculous.

I think you're kidding, but if you're not, it's pretty easy to take normal cow's milk and make it just as healthy as this. Fat free milk's been around as long as whole milk's been around. If you want omega 3 fatty acids in the milk, that can be added too. I can't see any dairy farmer being interested in this cow, because it doesn't produce the most expensive part of the milk--the butterfat.

Scientists could probably genetically engineer a cow to produce homogenized milk as well. That would be even more useless.

Dude, have you ever had milk straight from the cow? (Well, not strait from the tits, but milked minutes before you drink it.) The healthiest stuff in the wold! Am I dead yet, having drunk it numerous times? Spare me your modern science, your gummint reports, pleeeeze!

My grandmother used to serve us fresh milk for our cereal when we visited her. Drove me up the wall. Wasn’t even chilled. Couldn’t stand it.

Hillary Clinton gives cold milk.

May I suggest besides being cold, it is also sour, not that I know anyone willing to try to drink it {barf alert, for sure}!

Compared to All Jersey milk, milk from Holstein cows tastes like Skim. I drank raw milk for many years and no ill effects. Matter of choice, if the Gummint will give you a choice.
