All: While this story is a classic, most people think it is just that, one of Crockett's "stories" that never really occurred. (I just did a Liberty Fund Seminar in Cleveland on this very story six months ago).

Moreover, while Crockett was a great hero and, in this case (if true) had the right response, do not forget he was a Whig, he supported the Whig program, and as such he did favor helping businesses in the form of roads, harbor improvements, canals built at public expense, and so on.

Sounds just like the 'greatest' Republican of the 19th century...Just because Crockett called himself a Whig doesn't mean he was Clay's lap dog just like the 'greatest' Republican of the 19th century
