Understanding the Palestinian infighting [It's the JOOOZ fault!]
Jerusalem Post ^ | May 28, 2007 | Daoud "Jews ate my underpants!" Kuttab

Posted on 05/28/2007 6:11:06 PM PDT by Alouette

The senseless killing among Palestinians that peaked two weeks ago has hurt the Palestinian cause. Palestinians in the West Bank, where it is rumored that all available weapons and ammunition have been purchased by militants from one faction or the other, are bracing for some difficult days ahead.

A trend is developing in which Palestinians and Israelis use attacking the other side in order to deal with their internal problem. The spike in rocket attacks by Hamas took place precisely when the movement's reputation was hurt because of their unprovoked assassination of members of the Palestinian national security forces stationed outside the strategic Karni cargo crossing point.

Palestinians can't blame anyone but themselves. Despite the economic siege and restriction on movement placed on Gaza, there is little that anyone can say by way of explaining the madness that occurred when Palestinians began killing each other for no apparent strategic advantage. The way in which attempts at self-government have been executed leaves little hope for successful peace talks.

An outside observer can easily be excused for asking how Palestinians, who cannot learn to administer power fairly, apply the rule of law and understand the meaning of power-sharing and rotation of power in Gaza can guarantee that they can do it in the rest of the Palestinian territories.

WHILE THE internal fighting is a black spot in Palestinian history, some contextualization is necessary. Palestinian territories - Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem - have been under a brutal foreign military occupation for 40 years. Since Israelis left Gaza, the only open border - to Egyptian Sinai - for over 1 million Palestinians has been closed many more days than it was opened.

Because of the still unresolved problem of the captured Israeli soldier, Israel has frequently used its influence to press European monitors to close the Rafah crossing into Sinai. Such action constitutes collective punishment, and therefore is a clear violation of international law.

The Palestinian rocket attacks against Israeli civilians are also a violation of international humanitarian law.

Furthermore, the unjust economic siege by which the international banking system prohibits a single penny from being transferred into an account of the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority has caused extreme poverty and unemployment. With little hope for the present or the future, it is not difficult to predict more chaos.

The Mecca agreement between Hamas and Fatah resulted in an agreement by which the dominant legislative authority (Hamas) agreed to give up power in order to please the international community and break the unjust economic siege. But three months into the new national unity government, no lifting of the siege has been witnessed.

Sources from Gaza indicate that the last round of internal fighting was instigated by some hardline officials (unconfirmed reports have even pointed to the former ministers of foreign affairs and interior) who were asked to leave in order to make room for the national unity government. The talk in Gaza has been that these ousted leaders are wondering why their movement has decided to share power with Fatah if the latter has not been able to bring an end to the economic siege.

ONE CAN argue that Hamas cannot blame Fatah for the continuation of the siege. President Mahmoud Abbas has repeatedly said that the commitments made by Hamas in Mecca were not enough. It was hoped that the movement would show more moderation by moving closer to the demands of the international community.

The rocket attacks against Sderot and the harsh Israeli response has given a relief to Palestinian internal fighting.

Last week as Palestinians were remembering 59 years since the nakba - catastrophe - when the Palestinian refugee problem was born, Palestinian newspapers ran eight-column headlines in black and red calling what is happening in Gaza a new nakba. But while commemorating the nakba is supposed to remind the world of the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their lands and homes, the new nakba is threatening to make the dream of an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza as difficult as the right of return.

The point is Hamas refuses to recognize Israel and abide by signed agreements with Israel. Instead it has chosen to disregard them and engage in fraticidal warfare with fellow Palestinians. All of this is purely its own behavior and Israel has nothing to do with it. Contra Daoud Kuttab, the Palestinians are not ready for independent statehood when they can't even live in peace with other much less than to govern themselves responsibly.

The evil Joooos deprived them of their natural prey by building a hateful murderous wall.

Teddy Kennedy and John McStain say walls dont work to protect nations so the only possible reason for the evil Joooos building the wall was to kill poor people practicing their religion of pieces.

The author has some problems with discriminating the level of criminality between murder and trade restrictions.

Here's a clue: Trade and travel restrictions do not kill people.

Under the "brutal foreign military occupation" the Palestinian standard of living rose. There was law and order and security. There was no religious extremism. Palestinians could speak their minds and freely oppose Israel. They have none of that today where only a "Lord Of The Flies" anarchy exists and every one faces the prospect of a violent death. But Israel still gets blamed from being the heavy when the historical facts are the exact opposite of what Israel's presence was like in the West Bank and Gaza for 40 years.

Yes, people can’t possibly be expected to act rationally after they’ve been brutalized. After the Holocaust, the Jews of Palestine killed each other in great numbers as a result of their brutal oppression by the Nazis. Oh, wait, ..... that didn’t happen.

Methinks Palestinian behavior is more driven by the fact that they’ve been the World’s #1 welfare queens for the last 60 years. If you don’t have to work, you’ve got idle time to cause all kinds of trouble.

Yep. I think Israel should cut off economic subsidies and electricity and water to Gaza. That's a non-violent sanction in response to the Hamas rockets raining down on Sderot. If the Palestinians paid a real price for their behavior, their aggression will stop. So far its been all carrots and no sticks with them. Its time Israel began applying the sticks.

That Time cover is a perfect example of useful idiots in the media (37 years ago) being taken in by a sham, if of course it is a romantic sham that fits their template. Walter Duranty did it for the New York Times, too.

You agree with William Tecumseh Sherman. His advice (in both the Civil War and the Indian Wars) and Washington's too. See Washington's letter to Sullivan.

Instead the Israeli response seems to channel the sleep-walking warrior George B. McClellan. Not even Orde's alarm clock can wake the sleeping Israeli body politic.

Met a professor here (in CA) from Israel on a sabbatical. I said something about ‘your neighbors are nuts.’ He looked at me quizzically and said, “We have a list of things we WISH FOR. But we have to be realistic and learn to share.” I thought — “Your neighbors are nuts, and you are too.” He also disagreed with the Pope, said he had made things worse with the Muzzies.

I know what he means. Israel is a small country. New Jersey in size and population. It's surrounded on both ends and in the middle by much bigger nations -- the gangs of NY multiplied a hundred times. Sure Israel has seemed to be tough since the the '67 war, since the initial victories in '48. But those were -- perhaps -- miracles.

Israel has no colossal fields of oil to be a stream a wealth -- every GDP shekel is a physical, mental and emotional effort to gain. Hard earned.

The Israelis know, in truth, how strong their military is.

How strong --in material, men, logistics and training -- is the New Jersey National Guard?

Could we put the NJ National Guard -- alone, alone, alone -- up against the combined regular and irregular forces of Syria, Iran, Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and parts every other Muslim nation? Would New Jerseyans be of the same words as your professor?

Perhaps, though, those wars were miracles because the people were tough. Now that they think they have to get along, they are seen as weak by their neighbors, and they have a lot more trouble to show for their niceness.
