WASHINGTON — President Bush will impose new economic sanctions against Sudan and call for a U.N. resolution to compel the country to stop stalling international efforts to halt the bloodshed in Darfur, senior administration officials said.
The president planned to announced the punitive actions Tuesday because he believes the situation in Darfur has worsened, said the two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to pre-empt the president's announcement.
The new action will stiffen enforcement of existing sanctions, bar more companies in Sudan from using the U.S. financial system, and clamp down on individuals suspected of violence in Darfur where more than 200,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million people chased from their homes in four years of fighting.
The president also is directing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to draft a proposed U.N. resolution to strengthen international pressure on the hardline Sudanese government of President Omar al-Bashir, the officials said.
In announcing the sanctions Tuesday at the White House, Bush will says that Bashir's actions over the past few weeks "follow a long pattern of promising cooperation while finding new methods of obstruction," according to a draft of the remarks.

As with Iraq, history shows that in a case of rogue regimes, the only way to really stop them is by military intervention. However, with the US busy in Iraq, it doesn't look hopeful for the Africans in Darfur to receive alleviation from being killed anytime soon.
We all know that the Arabs (big surprise) are to blame for the genocide because of the janjaweed militias. Yet, without US military intervention, the Africans in Darfur are screwed because they're left with 1), only appeals from liberal actors like George Clooney that the bloodshed should end, or 2), the laughingstock "forces" that are the African Union troops and the blue helmets of the UN.

President Bush today ordered immediate implementation of economic sanctions against Sudan, saying the government of President Omar al-Bashir has continued to obstruct efforts to end genocide in Darfur.
“President Bashir’s actions over the past few weeks follow a long pattern of promising cooperation while finding new methods for obstruction,” Bush said.
Bush barred 30 companies owned by the Sudanese government and a 31st company suspected of transporting weapons to government forces in Darfur from doing business in the United States or with U.S. citizens. Sanctions also were applied to three individuals, including one Darfur rebel leader.
Bush said he would push for new U.N. sanctions on Sudan, including an expanded arms embargo and a ban on offensive military flights over Darfur.
Implementation of the measures, announced in April, was delayed to give U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon a chance to negotiate the deployment of additional peacekeepers in Darfur, where hundreds of thousands have died in what the United States and United Nations say is a genocidal onslaught by government forces and Arab militia over the past four years.
Members of Congress have been pressuring Bush for months to implement the planned sanctions. “These sanctions are a step in the right direction to hold the Sudanese government accountable, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said.
