Bush Attacks Immigration Deal Opponents

GLYNCO, Ga. (AP) - President Bush attacked opponents of an immigration deal Tuesday, suggesting they “don’t want to do what’s right for America.”

“The fundamental question is, will elected officials have the courage necessary to put a comprehensive immigration plan in place,” Bush said against a backdrop of a huge American flag.

He described his proposal—which has been agreed to by a bipartisan group of senators—as one that “makes it more likely we can enforce our border—and at the same time uphold the great immigrant tradition of the United States of America.”

Bush spoke at the nation’s largest training center for law enforcement.

He chose the get-tough setting as conservative critics blast a Senate proposal as being soft on people who break the law. Hoping to blunt that message, Bush emphasized that any new options for immigrants and foreign workers would not start until tougher security is in place.

The presidential stop came during a congressional recess, with senators back home and facing pressure from the left and right on the immigration plan. Bush’s aim is to build momentum for the legislation, perhaps his best chance for a signature victory in his second term. The Senate expects to resume debate on it next week.

“A lot of Americans are skeptical about immigration reform, primarily because they don’t think the government can fix the problems,” Bush said.

“And my answer to the skeptics is: give us a chance to fix the problems in a comprehensive way that enforces our border and treats people with decency and respect. Give us a chance to fix this problem. Don’t try to kill this bill before it gets moving,” Bush told students and instructors at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.

Bush repeatedly cast the matter as one of political courage.

“Those determined to find fault with this bill will always be able to look at a narrow slice of it and find something they don’t like,” the president said. “If you want to kill the bill, if you don’t want to do what’s right for America, you can pick one little aspect out of it.

“You can use it to frighten people,” Bush said. “Or you can show leadership and solve this problem once and for all.”

The bill would give temporary legal status to millions of unlawful immigrants, provided they came forward, paid a fine and underwent criminal background checks. To apply for a green card, they would have to pay another fine, learn English, return to their home country and wait in line.

The plan also would create a guest worker program. It would allow foreign laborers to come to the U.S. for temporary stints, yet with no guarantee they can eventually gain citizenship.

Both the new visa plan and the temporary worker program are contingent on other steps coming first. Those include fencing and barriers along the Mexico border, the hiring of more Border Patrol agents and the completion of an identification system to verify employees’ legal status.

The legislation would also reshape future immigration decisions. A new point system would prioritize skills and education over family in deciding who can immigrate.

Georgia’s senators both played leading roles in producing Bush’s deal with the Senate. Yet they have also said they may not support the final bill, depending upon how it is amended.

Bush chastised those who say the proposal offers amnesty to illegal immigrants. He called it empty political rhetoric.

Gee, I wonder if Mr. Bush told the attendees at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center just how many illegal aliens have murdered their fellow law officers?

Officer Rodney Johnson

WASHINGTON – Charged with molesting a 12-year-old girl, Juan Leonardo Qunitero had been deported back to Mexico in 1999 as an illegal alien. Nevertheless, last week, he was back in the U.S., living comfortably in a city that prohibited police from asking anyone about their immigration status.

Rodney Johnson was a 12-year veteran on the Houston police force. Married with five children, he was big, kind-hearted and unafraid of working the toughest gang beats or late-night shifts.

On Thursday, Sept. 21, around 5:30 p.m., he pulled over a white Ford pickup driving 50 mph in a 30 mph zone in what should have been a routine traffic stop. The driver, Quintero, had neither a driver’s license nor any other identification so, after a pat down, Johnson handcuffed him and placed him in the back of his patrol car. But Johnson missed the gun in Quintero’s waistband. The prisoner pulled it out and fired four times at Johnson at close range.

When Johnson was laid to rest this week after his execution-style murder he joined a growing list of law enforcers gunned down by foreign criminals. Meanwhile, in Florida, a sheriff’s deputy was killed and another shot in the leg yesterday after they pursued a motorist who ran away from a traffic stop.

Deputy Vernon Matthew “Matt” Williams and his K-9 unit were shot dead, officials said. Deputy Doug Speirs was shot in the leg but was expected to recover. Polk County sheriff’s deputies early today said they shot and killed a suspect, described as a black man with a Jamaican accent with dreadlocks.

And if there was another “New America” out there I would go. Hey, maybe a bunch of us could invade, I mean migrate to another country and take that over.

I know about the nephew - a good looking young man who has already been in trouble with the law for drunk driving. He does appear to be working hard building his political resume. Considering his behavior and that of his sister and his outrageous cousins, it’s amazing how quiet the Media is about all that. Very sad outlook for the future. Like the Kennedys, none of these apples are falling far from their tree.

I wouldn't underestimate the Bushes - the current President Bush managed to hide his DUI and suspended driver's license from the media for a long time, as well as most Americans (and I'd bet most don't know that he had his license suspended for a couple of years).

This young family was utterly destroyed by illegal alien crime; Sean, 24 and his 5-month-old daughter were killed by an illegal in a head-on crash that left Natalie with permanent brain damage. Neither young pregnant women nor elderly men are saved from this scourge. FSM Editors demand of Congress: what will it take for you to end this unspeakable carnage?

Without meaningful border security, there's no guarantee that illegals will cheerfully pay fines, go home, and wait in line. They've already broken the laws prior. Why should they comply now?

Bush said that all the other steps in his AMNESTY won't begin until the enforcement is taken care of. Well, we've been had twice on this, once in 1965, and again 1986. Fool me once...

Bush is totally out to lunch on this issue, and it jeopardizes his other accomplishes as well.

Definition of a LOSER.

One who cannot distinguish friend from enemy.

There is NO ONE who wishes you more harm than Teddy Kennedy.

I am your friend, I have wished you the best. I voted for you twice.

I have always been and will always be for securing our borders, telling Vincente Fox and whoever else might be el Presidente of Mexico to keep out of our business, and for enforcing whatever the law is.

You are a bigger LOSER than your promising breaking NWO father and that is saying something.

History will not be kind to a draft dodging drunk of a fratboy who was caught driving drunk with his own sister. Your butt buddy Teddy Kennedy, never drove his sisters in drunken stupors, just political groupies, but then again you never had enough masculine charm for female groupies, save for Harriet Miers.

And Bush has the nerve to say that "people haven't read it..." IT WAS NEGOTIATED BEHIND CLOSED DOORS YOU IDIOT!

I’m beginning to wonder whether it might make financial sense to renounce my U.S. citizenship and declare myself an illegal alien.

As a self-employed sole proprietor, it will save me a ton on taxes and time! Just think of all that paperwork I can blow off!

I’m bent out of shape over this issue, so much so that I can see how a comment might be deleted. This legislation does not pass the smell test on any level.

what seems very troubling to me is the way they preached homeland security, then created another massive government bureaucracy, but yet let millions of illegals pass into this country. For all we know, there could be a thousand al qaeda sleepers here now because they don't want to enforce the borders or build a separation wall and round up the 12 -20 million illegals.

does Bush really expect millions of present illegals to come forward, pay huge fines, become tax paying citizens and plow ahead with all of the paper work to become citizens? I believe they should round them all up and send them back where they belong, where they can start at the immigration office just like anyone else has to. Maybe that will give that oversized and costly new bureaucracy something to do. Something they should have done over the past five years. This is nothing more than a big government program that will fail just like the last one did.

Prosecute the employers hiring illegals. As the hiring of illegals becomes more and more unattractive, some, not all, but *some* of the problem will begin to solve itself.

I have been thinking about that mindset for a while now. I see a big jump in crime happening. Their already illegal in this country not obeying our laws, if the work dries up, business', homes and cars start getting broken into. Once that competition starts getting to heavy, muggings and home invasions.

Call me crazy, but that is what I see the logical conclusion will be to punishing employers. I'm for building a wall, boosting ICE and Border Patrol numbers and start raiding the day worker known sites and let the deportations begin (BTW, thought about that too, the day laborer sites, get 'em for loitering as a precursor to catch them as illegals; wouldn't want to tranp on their "rights" now would we??). Following that, start in on punishing employers (landscaping, pool maintenance, you know the bigguns that can be nailed right off the bat.

“I’m beginning to wonder - why support a PC war ‘over there’ to keep them from fighting us ‘over here’ when we won’t even protect our own borders?”

Exactly my thoughts on the matter.

Send my kids off to die in Iraq while our government is giving our country away?

No thanks.

If they don't want to apply for a green card or eventual citizenship, they don't have to pay a fine nor do they have to go home. The Z visa can be renewed indefinitely. And there will be no waiting in line in their home country. It is a quick turnaround [touchback] just to apply for the green card/immigrant visa. They [heads of households] are assured a return no matter what happens to their application, which is processed behind those already in the queque.

Bush said that all the other steps in his AMNESTY won't begin until the enforcement is taken care of. Well, we've been had twice on this, once in 1965, and again 1986. Fool me once...

All illegals are given immediately a probationary visa. Six months after the bill is signed, the illegals can apply for their Z visas. They have a year to apply but the Secretary for Homeland Security can add an additional year so someone will probably have a two and one-half year window to get their Z visa. I can envisage a stampede of people trying to get into the US during this window.
