MOSCOW: A senior Russian official said strategic and tactical missiles tested Tuesday can penetrate any missile defense system, Russian news agencies reported.

"As of today Russia has new (missiles) that are capable of overcoming any existing or future missile defense systems," ITAR-Tass quoted First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov as saying. "So in terms of defense and security Russian can look calmly to the country's future."

Ivanov spoke after the Russian Strategic Missile Forces announced the test of a new intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple independent warheads. He said Russia had also successfully tested a tactical cruise missile.

Does anyone else miss the Cold War? Seriously, it was nice to have a defined enemy that we could talk of defeating with better tanks, guns, and ships. MAD was a frightening concept, but it seems that an Islamic takeover of Europe is more likely than nuclear war ever was.

Yeah, the Russians.

Who cares? They can destroy earth anytime they’d like, just like always. If they want to waste money sprucing up their nuclear phallic symbol, so be it. If that’s what they need to convince themselves that we haven’t magically invented a system which can neutralize their entire nuclear arsenal then good for them. It just makes their arguments about the missile defense systems in Eastern Europe that much more hollow.

Isn't also what helped to bring down in the first place. They couldn't keep up with our spending on defense?

Yeah, the Russians.

Good point. I guess I was very naive about the collapse of the USSR. I would have thought that Russia would have become a happy, booming free market economy by now, and a close friend of the USA.

I don't feel so bad when President Bush apparently made the same incorrect assumption.

Tell that to the generals with their hands on the button during the Cuban Missile Crisis in '62. Nuclear war is just one escalated crisis away. It could happen between Israel and anyone in the Middle East, India and Pakistan, India and China, China and the U.S., China and Russia, Russia and Europe, and Russia and the U.S.... etc. Nuclear weapon arsenals are increasing all around the globe and are in the hands of more states than during the Cold War. In my humble opinion the nuclear war is more likely than an Islamic takeover of Europe.

If the islamist take over in Europe, they will have nuclear weapons. That's a double whammy.

If they’re that good, why all the belly-aching about the defensive missiles in Poland?

Perhaps they need “X” number of missiles to guarantee to overwhelm a screen and meet the marketing hype, and they can only afford something quite less than “X”?

Good question. IMHO it looks like russia wants Europe lock, stock and barrel and doesn't want anyone questioning how they're going to do it. They already hold sway when it comes to gas for them. Maybe our 'allies' in that part of the world will finally wake up and see the bear as their enemy not us.

It sure does scare the ruskies having defensive shields in Poland, doesn't it.

If they get Musharraf out of power in Pakistan they will have them. A couple more months to years and they will have them in Iran.

They sure will. How many times have they tried to assassinate him now?

With iran, time is ticking down to do something about them. I hope we don't wait too long.
