CDS Presents Awards to Members of Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM)
NR-07.046 - May 30, 2007
OTTAWA – During a private ceremony held today, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), General Rick Hillier, presented 17 Mention in Dispatches and 15 CDS Commendations to members of the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM). Personnel serving within CANSOFCOM were acknowledged for their actions, bravery and commitment to service during recent deployments in Afghanistan.
“Today we recognized the outstanding bravery and actions of our soldiers in CANSOFCOM,” said Gen. Hillier. “Our special operations forces continue to conduct operations in an exemplary fashion, displaying dedication to service, commitment to Canada, and ensuring they remain world class in what they do.”
A Mentions in Dispatches is awarded for valiant conduct, devotion to duty or other distinguished service. The CDS Commendation is awarded to members of the Canadian Forces (CF) who perform a deed or activity beyond the demands of normal duty.
“This is tangible recognition of the outstanding professionalism the soldiers under my command display on a daily basis during operations.” said Colonel Dave Barr, the Commander of Canadian Special Operations Forces Command. “Canadians should be demonstrably proud of the actions of their Special Forces.”
CANSOFCOM is composed of Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2), the Canadian Forces’ special operations and counter-terrorism unit; the Joint Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defence Company, the Canadian Special Operations Regiment; and 427 Special Operations Aviation Squadron. CANSOFCOM provides the CDS and operational commanders agile, high readiness Special Operations Forces (SOF) capable of conducting special operations across the spectrum of conflict at home and abroad. Integrating special operations forces in this manner increases their impact in operations, as well as the range of options available to the government in the deployment of the Canadian Forces
