A Cloud Hangs Over Ellis Island (Shamnesty Bill)
National Review ^ | May 31, 2007 | Kathryn Jean Lopez

I’ve come to hate the topic of immigration, which is an awful thing for any American — and one named “Lopez” at that — to admit. Immigration should be an inspirational topic about “huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” But in 2007, it’s not: It’s a contentious, unserious, dangerous topic.

-SNIP-

I’ll compromise where I have to. I’ll put up with bad judgment here and there: Harriet Miers? The incompetent Alberto Gonzales? Torching the First Amendment by signing campaign-finance reform? The war is important enough that you can get over some things. He knows there’s an enemy out there that hates America. I’m glad he’s president and neither Al Gore nor john Kerry is.

But immigration is about the war, too. It’s literally our first line of defense. Who gets in and out? Who is here? These are pretty fundamental questions in a country where there are already an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants. And yet, the president, instead of taking such concerns seriously, engages in immature name-calling.

On the day a deal between Senate leaders and the White Supposedly, the attitude goes, if you’re not with Jorge Arbusto, you’re filled with anti-Hispanic, anti-immigrant “animosity.” Earlier this week he dismissed all those who use the word “amnesty” in reference to the bill. "If you want to scare the American people, what you say is the bill's an amnesty bill. That's empty political rhetoric trying to frighten our citizens.” -SNIP-

When Republicans like George W. Bush, and even the beloved conservative Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, give in to a vast amnesty plan, how much worse could the Democrats be?

On the NRO home page is a post by Kathryn that includes this link to a rant by Laura Ingraham that reflects the feelings of many, many conservatives who feel betrayed by this immigration bill.

Laura Ingraham "Taking off the Gloves"

I find that Laura expresses my sentiments very well.

America is more than just an address, and a welfare check.

Seems like many in our government have forgotten that.

I've always hated the "idealization" of immigration, legal and illegal, that has been pushed by the left since the 1920s. Especially if you grew up in the northeast, you can remember being propagandized in the U.S. about how we are "all immigrants." Its sickening.

Rush said that a high level White House person had been dispatched to convince him of goodness of this bill. He sent him packing. I don’t think any of the talkers want this bill passed. No wonder the President is reduced to demagoguery to get it through.

W is doing real damage to the GOP with this bill. Just as well, since the old Republican hands, with a few exceptions, are going along with him.

What a great word. What a great title. Shamnesty Bill. I hope this gains momentum like a snowball. I love George W. Bush but..he is WRONG TO THE TEETH on this and there is no way I can support him. I feel betrayed. I will never vote again!!!! Shamnesty Bill...That’s what I will use from now on.

Rush will alwasy have my trust. Bottom line...he is the word and deals in facts. I am with Rush and always will be. Look how long he has been around. He didn’t get there by being inept. They say he is entertaining because they can’t say anything else about him so they try and minimilize his worth. Well, those out there don’t know Rush if they think he would stoop to being manipulated. Thank GOD for Rush and he said it well yesterday when he said the people are shocked and hurt by Bush’s actions and comments. He is right on.

Well little bush, if conservatives tell the truth about what you are doing and it scares American citizens don’t be surprised. Since what you are doing will be the destruction of this country they should be scared. Be very very afraid America. I can’t say what I really think should happen little bush and the others.

He had done more to advance the conservative cause than anyone else. Even Buckley. He could not have kept this up for 18 years of it was an act.

Still, it's important to use your critical thinking skills on anything you hear from any pundit.

You should always vote - but only for candidates who understand that they are beholden to the people they represent.

...how much worse could the Democrats be?

Is this supposed to be a real option? The end of Western freedom and ideas replaced by totalitarian/socialism? No thanks.

I know and understand that. I did that over the years and did that with GWB. I thought he was the do all be all and I trusted and believed in him to do right by all of us. The border situation is unforgiveable and goes against everything my parents worked for and is a slap in the face to every military person who gave their lives fighting for our freedoms. We are scrutinized at airports yet anyone can walk over the border! That goes against the very fabric of what is right. Who is to say the next President wont’ do the same thing? Once your vote is cast they can do anything they want and they usually do. I am very brokenhearted over GWB and I never thought he would become like the others. I don’t trust anyone in politics anymore. Anyone.

Well, no matter because I think Rush would do just that if he was approached. Rush is the real source for the truth.

I agree with you over trusting any politician, however if we can keep voting incumbents out of office maybe they will get the message.

Well, that’s a nice thought and I applaud you for your being positive like I used to be when it came to politics. All I do now is pray for our country and our generations to come.

Rush said that a high level White House person had been dispatched to convince him of goodness of this bill. He sent him packing.

Wonder if it was Tony Snow that was sent? I hope not.
