Fred Rogers got his start in television through his musical background when, after earning a bachelor's degree in music composition in 1951, he was hired by NBC television in New York to serve as an assistant producer (and later as a floor director) for several of the music-variety type programs (The Voice of Firestone, The Lucky Strike Hit Parade, The Kate Smith Hour) prevalent on TV in the early 1950s.

A few years later, he returned to his hometown area to develop programming for WQED in Pittsburgh, the nation's first community-sponsored educational television station. One of the first programs he developed for WQED was The Children's Corner, which contained many of the elements and characters Fred Rogers would incorporate into his own show when he made his on-camera debut as host of Misterogers for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1963.

Mr. Rogers was the ONLY thing worth watching on PBS. With characteristic west Pennsylvania friendliness, Fred Rogers was able to talk TO children without talking down to them.

Laugh all you like, but Fred Rogers was a cherished part of my childhood. I WISH I had a neighbor like him.

I used to be a genuine tough guy. Now I’m a hands-on Grandpa. Rogers is my role model, and I’m not kidding.

“God loves you just the way you are.”

Yes, this is true. God loves the sinner, but hates the sin. That’s why Jesus loves people enough to have the guts to say to them, “Go and sin no more.”

He was a true class act, the kind you don’t see too many of in the entertainment business. I didn’t grow up with him, as I’m Canadian and we didn’t have cable or live close enough to the US to receive PBS off the air. It’s clear, however, that he was a much-loved part of many, many people’s childhood. He worked in Canada with a man who did a somewhat similar show, “Mr. Dressup” - Ernie Coombs - or more precisely, Mr. Coombs worked with and learned from him.

But when the crowd spotted Rogers, they all simultaneously burst into song, chanting “It’s a wonderful day in the neighborhood.”

Not to be nitpickey, but that should be "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood"...

He Saved Both Public Television and the VCR

Every man is entitled to a few mistakes so I’ll give him a pass for PBS.
