Rep. Duncan Hunter on Border Security (Hunter on O'Reilly- 2005)
Fox News ^ | Nov 9, 2005 | BOR/Duncan Hunter

Posted on 06/01/2007 12:52:37 PM PDT by pissant

This is a partial transcript from "The O'Reilly Factor," November 8, 2005, that has been edited for clarity.

BILL O'REILLY, HOST: In the "Impact" segment tonight, a new FOX News Opinion Dynamics poll says 78 percent of Americans believe the government is not doing enough to secure the borders. And 51 percent want a wall built on the Mexican border.

Now in your district, you fought against, I guess, environmental interests and other special interest groups to complete a fence. And then, that fence is almost completed south of San Diego, correct?

REP. DUNCAN HUNTER (R), CALIFORNIA: That's right. And in 1994, when the Republicans took control of the House, the land between Tijuana and San Diego was the most prolific smuggler's corridor in America.

That's the smuggling corridor through which most of the cocaine and most of the people were smuggled from Mexico into the United States.

So we designed and built, Bill, a triple fence. That's three layers of fencing. And we did all of it, except for the one piece in what is known as Smuggler's Gulch.

And we had trouble with the environmentalists. They hung us up for six years. And last year, we got a full vote in the House and the Senate, signed by the president. And we're now going to complete that gap.

O'REILLY: All right. So you're envisioning from Brownsville to Chula Vista, a double or triple fence the way you have it in San Diego County?

HUNTER: Precisely.

Vote for the man who has never waivered in his efforts to stop illegal immigration stone cold.

I’d much prefer the reverse.

Agreed. As VP he'll get the national recognition he doesn't seem to be receiving now. He'll jump from his current 6th-8th place to frontrunner by 2016 (he'll be 68 yrs old).

He’s getting alot more air time these days. And that’s a darn good thing.

Admittedly, prior to this campaign season, I was not familiar with Duncan Hunter. I’d vote for him in a second if he was the nominee.

I believe you are right. I only hope he can do it.

Good post, it shows Hunter has been on the job and is something more than a written position. He lives it. I was reading his guest blog at LGF yesterday on Israel and the comments to him were really positive. There were the obligatory and misguided Thompson/Hunter ‘08 posts and as I can see we already have one of those on this thread.

Thanks for the link. Since Miller is a Rudy guy, did he treat Hunter fairly?

Obviously he doesn’t want to do “what’s right for America.” /s

He even opposed Reagan’s 1986 amnesty, citing all the reasons it was folly, all which have come to pass.

It's a valid question, in my opinion. It also shows incredible respect for Rep Hunter to have supporters of somebody else wanting your choice as VP. It should tell you that if Rep Hunter does in fact find a way to pull out the nomination, probably every single solitary Thompson supporter will be squarely behind him.

Yep....I think he’s giving Hunter a second look because of the immigration/fence issue. Dennis seemed most bothered by the fact that only 11 miles have been built to date and the (sh)amnesty bill cuts that from the full border to 300-ish miles.

If people don’t vote for him in the primaries, he won’t be the nominee.
