Univision snags top honors in media awards competition WLTV-TV 23 (Univision) in Miami has taken top honors in the 2007 Florida Bar Media Awards competition for its series of news reports, interviews, and legal segments on immigration rights and reform. The awards will be presented in conjunction with The Florida Bars June 1 Media Law Conference, to be held at the Stetson University College of Law, Tampa Law Center.
The Media Awards are presented annually in recognition of excellence in reporting that highlights the system of law and justice as it affects the people of Florida.
WLTVs 2006 Alerta al Inmigrante series included daily news updates filed by local reporters, anchors, and its Washington, D.C., correspondent; feature reports; and Univision Online, an interactive media component. The station also partnered with a local immigration law firm to offer free legal advice to viewers through a volunteer telephone bank.
Producer Teri Arvesu said that the campaign was intended to serve as a source of information and empowerment for undocumented immigrants and recent arrivals from Latin America. As a result of the campaign, we learned to address issues such as immigration fraud, individual rights, and the availability of government services, she said. As we immersed ourselves more in the issue, we became aware of the lack of legal and civic understanding of these immigrants. This awareness has been instrumental in better serving our public.
With the highest score across all entry categories, WLTV not only captured First Place in the Television News category, but also the Grand Prize for the competition.
The fact this was awarded to a spanish language TV network speaks volumes about the disregard those in the bar have for the state and national laws/constitutions.
It is also shocking considering the fact that amnesty rewards disrespect for the rule of law.
This so called award is about as merit based as Jimmy Carter's peace prize.
You also have to keep in mind this is the same bar that was attacking Guantanimo because the detainees were being treated as terrorists instead of mere civilian criminals.
It should’ve won on cleavage alone.
I have no problem with them giving an award to a Spanish/Chinese/Esperanto network. The telltale here is that it was a program that SPECIFICALLY TARGETED illegals!
Perhaps in a free market environment.
However, these are representing the agency which REGULATES the officers of the courts. Officers who are supposed to uphold the constitutions and laws of the land.
Most of those who are in the leadership of the FL bar do not even speak spanish so who was watching this?
Why are lawyers awarding a program that seeks to encourage breaking the law?
Ever wonder why the bar has such a bad reputation among Americans?
Sports Bar I hang around. Pro Football on screen one. College Football on screen two. Univision (no sound needed) on screen three.
Why are lawyers awarding a program that seeks to encourage breaking the law?
Thats easy. Many of them get their bread buttered by immigration, civil, and criminal cases in spanish.
Indeed. The women on that channel make it an overwhelming favorite in any category.
Immigration lawyers have been successivly hit with reforms and THE INTERNET.
Aliens can now easily obtain all forms ONLINE, and you have the “notarios” who “just fill in forms” at a fraction of the cost.
This leaves the immigration certified lawyers to do things like setting up dummy corporations to do immigration.
Something the FL Bar does NOT police.
