A fierce battle between local Sunni residents and al-Qaeda insurgents in an outlying Baghdad neighbourhood this week is evidence that moves to isolate the terror group by other Sunnis are taking hold even in the capital. According to a detailed report on the Washington Post on Friday a battle this week in the western Amiriyah area has claimed at least 28 lives. It quoted the local mayor Mohammed Abdul Khaliq as saying that residents, alienated by the indiscriminate violence of its fellow Sunnis, rose up to force al-Qaeda out.

The microcosm mirrors what is happening in the western provinces, especially al-Anbar and Diyala, where Sunni tribes have united in an anti-Qaeda alliance.

Anbar, now Baghdad. The surge is working. Further proof is the fact that the terrorists are now pressing for a ceasae-fire. They’ll only use it to rearm and resupply, as the Vietcong did when LBJ gave them repeated ceasefires, butthe fact that they are the ones pressing for it shows that they’re losing.

The Cimmycraps are in a major hurry to lose this war becaue we may win it before they can stop it.

I am sure GWB and the Pentagon have deliberately held down to a minimum what the surge's goals where.
Many things in the making as we have read now happening in al Anbar and elsewhere where carefully worked out. Our forces have deliberatly keep down to a bear minimum who they where taking out.
For those that think this surge was simply a increase in forces to carry out police actions, I think they are missing the boat. It has been a carefully contrived campaign to gain the confidence of those that up till recently could not trust the US forces, let alone the Shia gov/military.
Things are now changing. More Sunni as well as Shia will side with the government in hopes their lives will eventually become better. The counter insurgency plan requires the locals to switch sides once convinced they have been had. It is starting to pay off.
With that. Have a good day, gotta get ready for work.
