US warplanes circle Baghdad

US jets and helicopters circled over Baghdad amid the sound of explosions and heavy machinegun fire on Saturday evening, residents said.

A Reuters journalist saw at least one air-to-ground missile streak through the air before hitting the ground with a large flash.

The military activity, which by 1945 GMT (0545 Sunday AEST) appeared to have died down, seemed to be centred around the Shi'ite stronghold of Sadr City in north-eastern Baghdad, the residents said.

Iraqiya state television said US warplanes bombarded Habibibya, an area in Sadr City.

Residents told a Reuters journalist in Sadr City there had been casualties and that US troops had cordoned off Habibibya. This could not be independently verified.

Yep, I heard all of that. I even mentioned it to another FReeper here while it was going on. Guess I got it out there before the news did. ;-)

It's quiet now. Well....for now. But it was very noisy for a while and some of that gunfire was freakin' CLOSE. I just stayed put and listened.

Sadr resides in Najaf... but I get what you mean, and I am afraid you are right.

I hardly ever get to scoop FR...;-) In fact I frequently discover the source of noises I hear right on this site.

If you kill sadr, ther will just be another one.

I’m so tired of hearing about a “top tier terrorist” or assistant murderer or whatever they are being eliminated.

It’s whack-a-mole!

I say let them live in their hellhole with bad teeth, bad food and smelly women. Worse punishment than death.

You’re right. We probably should just let them have their way. After all, it’s so much easier for our will to break than theirs.

No “will” to break. F-em and the hole they choose to live in. They want to mess with us? Then our will should be to flatten them and not look back. Any “will” we have now has been lost to this P.C police action that as the father of 4 16 to 21yr old men breaks my heart to watch.

Yeah...I can't help it sometimes. So many of his supporters are so dysfunctional and socially inadept. I really shouldn't poke them, but I figure they need an occasional taste of reality. ;-)
