DISCRIMINATION: Justified exclusions

April 25 is ANZAC Day in Australia, marking the anniversary of the 1915 invasion of Ottoman Empire by Australian and New Zealand forces, hence Australian and New Zealand Army Corps Day. It is the most important day of commemoration for Australians.

Over time, ANZAC Day has suffered the same fate as military holidays in this country. Though it remains a day for solemn ceremonies for veterans, it's a day of protests for peaceniks and a day for parties for everyone else. This year, the nightclub at Collingwood's Peel Hotel in Melbourne fell into the last group with its ANZAC Day party reserved for homosexuals.

But under Australian law, the hotel could not exclude patrons based on their sexual orientation unless it got permission from the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Political correctness being what it is, the tribunal permitted the hotel to discriminate against heterosexuals, not just for the party, but forever if it wants.

How this landmark decision plays out across Australia remains to be seen, but tribunal member Cate McKenzie said allowing straight men and women into the club would "undermine or destroy the atmosphere which the company wishes to create." Added a spokeswoman for the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Lobby Group: "It's sad that members of our community would have to go to the (the tribunal) to preserve their rights."

We agree. Homosexuals have every right to exclude people from their clubs and activities if they believe outsiders who don't share their world view might demean them or undercut their values. It's called freedom of association. Too bad homosexuals didn't feel that way when they were persecuting the Boy Scouts over its right to exclude people with different values and beliefs.

I agree. Why don't we get them their own water fountains, too?
