Nearing a bid for president, former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee last night tested themes for 2008, including a tough line on terrorism and immigration that brought Virginia Republicans to their feet.

To a standing ovation, Thompson said, "We've got to secure the border first. . . . This is our house, and we get to decide who gets to come into our house."

Thompson said possible bipartisan consensus on the immigration bill represents a "disconnect between the people of this country and Congress like I've never seen before."

I can almost hear the dem panties knotting up...

Realizing FT is shooting out in front of the entire election process must be like a drug addict’s withdrawal sickness.

His talk of seucring the border is what we all want. Tancredo has been after that for years. Did Fred bring up the issue when he was a senator?

Reading the article.. I’t like the reporter was forced to sit in a corner with a dunce cap on and write it. (Compared to the recent spate of anklebiting)

Sounds to me like Freddy is finding HIS topic-—THE ISSUE-—of the 2008 campaign. Tie it into terrorism and “bing, bing, bing, Johnny, we have a winner!”

I think so too LS. I still like Hunter... but if Thompson runs, I'm going to listen to what he has to say. I like the way he winged-it with that YouTube response to Moore.

I don't think Hunter will even be viable as a veep. Face it: he just doesn't have any electoral clout. Six months and he's still at 1%??? Even a Mitt or a Thompson can't afford to have someone like that on the ticket.

My predictions took a hit in 2006 (but were damn good in 2004 and 2002) but I still think after the "shakeout," you'll see two of the "big four" team up---Rudy, Fred, Romney, McClame. And I'm guessing the final team-up will be Fred as Pres. and Mitt as veep. But we could, possibly, see a Fred/Newt ticket. I don't see a hope in hell of Newt winning the presidency, but if the veep is to solidify the base or bring in wayward states, Newt might do some of that.

You have to also think campaign: you cannot have two guys ever saying different things about immigration or WoT or whatever. So either the two have to be "simpatico" or one has to agree to shut up and let the other one talk (i.e., Bush with R. Reagan).

Their headline wrongly says he’s an ex-Tenn Senator. The story correctly says ‘former U. S. Senator’.

Ignorant savages.

In our local rag the Memorial Day Newspaper had a picture of Bubba and it said President Clinton. Bush is always Bush but to the rabid libs Bubba is still President.

Newt will hurt whatever ticket he’s on... the DBM has destroyed him in the eyes of the sheeple. In fact, his ‘debate’ with Kerry on GW dropped him a couple of notches in my own assessment of his worth.

Fill me in on this “Debate”? Don’t know that I know what you’re talking about.

You won't see Fred/Newt. Candidates from two abutting southern states won't cut the mustard on the collard greens.

I agree with you that a distinct possiblity is Fred/Mitt.....in fact, the most distinct-est, LOL.

That is.....if Mitt would be willing to accept the lower role in the pecking order.

IMO, Newt and Rudy have too much personal baggage to make the A-list despite the hopes and denials of their supporters.

You’re not going to like hearing this, but he is just Bush to ME now.

He has dishonored the office by refusing to enforce the immigration and border laws for the past 6+ years, and the bill he’s now pimping will allow illegal muslim terrorists to remain here w/o fear of deportation.

If the Dims begin impeachment, I will not defend him for anything.

That’s how much I’ve turned away from him.
