In Vermont, nascent secession movement gains traction

MONTPELIER, Vt. --At Riverwalk Records, the all-vinyl record store just down the street from the state Capitol, the black "US Out of Vt.!" T-shirts are among the hottest sellers.

But to some people in Vermont, the idea is bigger than a $20 novelty. They want Vermont to secede from the United States -- peacefully, of course.

Disillusioned by what they call an empire about to fall, a small cadre of writers and academics is plotting political strategy and planting the seeds of separatism.

They've published a "Green Mountain Manifesto" subtitled "Why and How Tiny Vermont Might Help Save America From Itself by Seceding from the Union." They hope to put the question before citizens at Town Meeting Day next March, eventually persuading the state Legislature to declare independence, returning Vermont to the status it held from 1777 to 1791.

Whether it's likely is another question.

"...writers and academics...plotting political strategy...

Vermont was better off when it had fewer writers/academics, and more cows.

I’d like to see the people in Vermont leave the United States, but they can’t take the land with them. It will simply be returned to New York which can then sell it off to others, or maybe donate it to the Iriquois to settle some pending land claims.

After they secede, the first thing they’ll do is come to the US Government with their hand out for foreign aid.

Secession is something I am in favor of for whoever wants to secede.

Imagine if you found yourself in a marriage and your spouse turned out to be a crackwhore who’s slept with everyone in town. You’d want out. That’s like secession on a personal level. Denying secession to a state is like saying, “I know she’s a crackwhore, but you can’t leave your marriage”.

Vermont was created by secession. This is hardly a newborn sentiment.

Vermont is a state which has seen a big influx of former New Yorkers and Massachusettsans and various dissafected people who like the mountains and small towns. They tend to be liberal / libertarian types.

Can secession happen? The previous incident in American history of secession resulted in the civil war and forcibly keeping the southern states in the union. Hard to imagine this gaining traction, but in a small state with a big group of disaffected people, they may be able to force the issue.

Boy are they full of themselves or what!

I vote to let them, one less Socialist state to be concerned about, and all liberal could move there.

Also was better off when if you walked around in brattleboro totally naked the police would do something about it...

EXCELLENT IDEA!

Don’t let the collective door of the rest of the nation hit you in the (part of the body perfectly suited to describe the locus of brains of most of the populace) on your way out.

Just one VERY IMPORTANT question:

Would Howard Dean still be allowed to travel beyond their borders without a visa?

How would those pansies defend themselves from, say, me or you? I’d grab lots of acres and what are they gonna do about it?
