This book review caught my eye. I had not heard about this inicident, but I'm always happy to read about Heroes.
Er..Halsey’s
If I recall, Halsey managed to take a U.S fleet into a typhoon TWICE.
I just finished it...one of the most gripping books I have read in a while.
A must read for any historian, and most certainly any naval historian...
“The only good Japenese is dead Japanese, I want to make as many Japanese good Japanese as I can.”

Victory at Sea sequences show scenes from either this or something entirely similar to it. It shows the bows of Iowa class ships going straight down into the water and coming up again.
a much older cousin was on the USS Essex during the typhoons. He said it was the scariest thing he’s ever been through.
From what I have read, no Admiral was more liked by his men. He was a man’s man. He had a great sense of humor. A no frills sea dog.
MacArthur called him the most fighty admiral in the Navy. Many remember him only for his mistakes, instead of his leadership.
Neither variety stopped the USN, though.
Big-time Halsey fan! I MUST READ...!
My father-in-law was on the Corregidor - a ‘Jeep carrier’ during this storm. He tells many interesting stories. His ship developed a hull crack during the storm. Cracks in these Liberty Ships led to rapid development of the science of Fracture Mechanics, a field in which I have spent a career. This damage took the Corregidor out of service in the Pacific for the rest of the war.

Excellent read.
I just printed this review out. There's an old salor I know who sailed through this storm. He told me about the three miserable days he was stuck below deck riding this one out. I think I'll pick up the book for him.
