Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, who has raised eyebrows in Washington by forging ties with Iran, said on Sunday he will travel to the country aboard a jet on loan from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Ortega, a Cold War-era enemy of Washington who is an ally of U.S. antagonist Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, told reporters he was leaving for Caracas, the first stop in a 10-day tour that will take him to Iran, Algeria, Libya and Cuba.

" We want to improve relations with Iran in all fields, in all areas,"...

A former Marxist guerrilla who fought U.S.-backed Contra rebels during his 1980s government, Ortega has reached out to Iran since recapturing the presidency this year. He has hosted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Managua.

I was in Costa Ricca recently. The Costa Ricans are simple, but in general, good people. I could see it from my own experience that the majority of the trouble makers and low lifes were from Nicaragua. There was a definate ethnic differance. Poor Costa Rica.

He’s just trying to be noticed. And collect a little cash: Ortega stole with both hands when he ran Nicaragua. A great pal of Chris Dodd and Teddy Kennedy. The Iranians will throw him a few bucks if he bashes America. We’d be best advised to ignore him—just another Third World jerk looking to gain attention. He’s yesterday’s story.

This is Carter’s buddy...
Does anyone else see the pattern...
The banana republics and the oil producers have finally received enough money to convince themselves that they - collectively - can take on the paper tiger America..

America - the nation that can not defend its own borders..
America - the nation that won’t fight a war to win anymore..
America - where half the Congress is ready to surrender immediately to the Islamists..
America - the nation that thought wearing a white hat and being charitable to all would win their support and affection.
America - who needs another “greatest generation” to come to her defense....

Will America find that “generation” before it is too late?
I’m beginning to doubt it..

Carbon credits? Should he not buy some carbon credits to offset the environmental cost of his visit?

Nicaragua is another example that, just because a country gains the ability, through U.S. involvement, to have democratic elections, doesn’t mean they won’t freely elect tyrants, sometimes the same ones they had before democracy.

Billy Carter had some dealings with Omar Khaddafi in Libya.

Bob Hope had a line that “the main difference between Jimmy Carter and his brother was that Billy had a foreign policy.”

Even here on FR we have nay sayers....

Yes, I’m beginning to doubt we, as a nation, have the character to win another war. Shame on us for lacking spine. November 2006 was hopefully not the beginning of the end.

And all this time I thought Ortega was a 'canned' chile.

Did Carter monitor the last (and I mean 'last') elections in Nicaragua?
