President Bush's immigration bill is hurting fundraising by the Republican National Committee, but fierce grass-roots opposition to the legislation is helping several state Republican parties.
Tina Benkiser, chairwoman of the Republican Party in ... Texas, says raising money has been successful "in large part to our principled stance against illegal immigration." (snip)
Similar reports from other state Republican officials in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa and Delaware suggest that opposition to any form of amnesty for illegal aliens is a fundraising winner.
This goes against the trend of declining national party contributions from rank-and-file donors who say they are angry about the attempt by Mr. Bush and some Republican senators to legalize the status of millions of illegal aliens.
The pain is particularly felt at the Republican National Committee. (snip) Several former employees say they had seen sharply declining contributions from past donors who refused to give now, telling solicitors that they are deeply angered by what they call the "pro-amnesty" stand of Mr. Bush and other Republicans. (snip)
"We have gotten several notes from people who said they weren't going to give the state party any more money until the party took the position against the immigration bill," says Mr. Anuzis, the Michigan party chairman.
In Arizona, where both Republican senators, Jon Kyl and John McCain, support the immigration bill, state Chairman Randy Pullen has strongly opposed the measure, as have most of the other state party officials. Mr. Pullen says his telemarketing team has reported a recent jump in contributions, although he isn't sure why.
"I can't really say for sure it's a real trend, but since coming out against the immigration bill in the Senate, I have gotten a lot of support from our base [constituency], which no longer attacks the state party."

Keep up them cards & letters, folks!!!
Kyl’s office gets picketed again this coming week.....with 2 more to follow : )
I’m curious as to how the democrat voters are reacting to this amnesty bill. Anyone know? Any sources online?
I'll swing by the cemetery tomorrow and check with some.
WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! TILL YOU RUN OUT OF INK IN YOUR PEN!
Bombard the Democrats as well, especially the ones that ran on an anti illegal immigration plank and the ones in marginal districts who could be vulnerable. keep pounding on them. This is a bipartisan issue not a Conservative or Liberal issue BUT AN AMERICAN issue.
Looks like a great idea for a tagline John...
with apologies and a slight re-write...
and phone calls and faxes and emails, too!
(no need for attribution)
The Democrats are pretty much opposed to this too, even the loony DUmmies. The whole shamnesty deal is being driven by our fearless leader, Jorge Bush.
For only ONE call did he say to the caller, "I'll tell the senator of your support". ALL of the other calls he said something like, "I'll tell the senator your feelings".
At Wyden's office (D), a cheerful young man added my name to a list of anti's. His co-worker, a grumpy, fifty something, typical lib broad said, "We've heard them all already", in a snippy tone when I asked if she wanted to know exactly why I opposed it.
Nam Vet
P.S. I'm sure both offices took note of my t-shirt. "Swift Boat Sailors - Combat Crew". I mentioned the idiot Skerry and exactly what I thought of him in the R's office, but gave the old lib dame a break.
Headline = Karl you magnificent b______!
It was just the ol’ Double Reverse play all along, to get the grass roots to contribute more money to the state parties!
Brilliant!
They’re never going to learn that lesson from Ted Kennedy, that lying about reality never alters reality.
Me, I’m bleeding the RNC dry until Martinez is history.
Grass roots party members or organizations AGAINST illegal amnesty would make some bucks, but the overall Republican party will be decimated by backing this criminality.
guess i needed that sarc tag after all
You might try what the John and Ken radio show did in L.A. with Congressman Dreier - do a political human sacrifice. Contact the media, dress up a protester as a cannibal, and beat a big drum outside the office on the sidewalk with lots of signs. Dreier hated it and tried to sue John and Ken. Google political human sacrifice for more info.
I have called both mccain and kyl’s offices repeatedly and get their vocie mail serves and their mail boxes have been full for weeks.

Good for you! Portland liberals sure don’t like being reminded that there’s a real world outside of the Tri-Met bus routes!
