Washington - President Bush's advocacy of an overhaul of immigration law and his attacks on critics of the plan are provoking a backlash from conservatives who form the bulwark of his remaining support, splintering his base and exposing divisions within a party whose unity has been the envy of Democrats.
It has pitted some of Bush's most stalwart congressional and grassroots backers against him, sparking a vitriol that has at times exceeded anything seen yet between Bush and his supporters, who have generally stood with him through the toughest patches of his presidency.
Those supporters now view him as pursuing amnesty for foreign lawbreakers when they say he should be focusing on border security.
Postings on conservative websites have gone so far as to call for Bush's impeachment, and usually friendly radio hosts, commentators and congressional allies warn that he could lose supporters at a time when he needs all the backing he can get on other matters, like Iraq.
Last week, in discussing Bush's recent comments accusing conservative critics of the immigration legislation of fear- mongering, Rush Limbaugh told listeners: "I just wish he hadn't done it, because he's not going to lose me on Iraq, and he's not going to lose me on national security. But he might lose some of you."

Why does Limbaugh still call this a democrat bill? He makes sounds like he’s against this bill but continues to claim the democrats wrote the bill.

Unfortunately, a simple "consider the source..." brush-off won't work on this issue. These reporters may indeed hate the President - but that just means that they derive smug satisfaction from writing:

I sure wish that their biased opinions of George W. Bush had colored the preceding text, but that does not appear to be the case. Sure, the Democrats are loving this... we'd be reveling in it too, were the positions reversed.

I am just as afraid of La Raza as I am of those who refuse to the truth behind this bill.
If we had 41 votes it would be a democrat bill, the pubbies can’t even hold 41 votes to prevent the destruction of their own party.
Limbaugh calls it a Democrat bill because he believes Bush cut a deal trading White House support for immigration amnesty in exchange for Democrat support for war funding.
However, immigration quotas is the only way this thing will be palatable to the American people, Democrat or Republican or Independent
I’m with you. For the longest time I thought I smelled Harried Meiers here - trot out something that is not the best and fire up the troops to fight to get the best. But I thing I have given up on that. God help us.
The amnesty part is demanded by Kennedy and democrats, If you recall, Bush just wanted a guest worker program, matching employers and workers. but the Dems took Congress, and as Rush says, elections have consequences.
If these are good people whom we should be honored to have among us, why do they have La Raza? Doesn’t look good to me.
All this bogus talk about dissent by Dems during the Iraq war, and now we see their true colors. They are scared to death of dissent and debate. This uproar will benefit both immigration policy and the Republican party if all the doomssayers will hold onto their hats and participate in the process to get the best possible outcome. There is a long way to go and many steps in the sausage making process. Stay engaged, learn more, look for better ideas. Size up the players and avoid meaningless pat slogans.
