Romney Is Central Target of McCain Counterattack (Political Strategy]
NYT ^ | June 4, 2007 | MARC SANTORA and MICHAEL COOPER

Posted on 06/04/2007 9:57:01 AM PDT by Sleeping Beauty

Senator John McCain, facing increasing anger from fellow Republicans over his support of the immigration bill in Congress, is ramping up his counterattack against a main rival in the presidential campaign, Mitt Romney, by accusing him of “pandering for votes” in opposing the measure.

Mr. Romney, in speeches and in early campaign commercials, has portrayed the proposal as being soft on illegal immigration — a sensitive red-meat issue for the Republican base — and condemned it as offering “amnesty” to illegal immigrants.

In fighting back, Mr. McCain is challenging Mr. Romney and other opponents of the Senate’s immigration plan to offer counterproposals explaining what they would do with the nation’s illegal immigrants, which he estimates could number 12 million. And his campaign has taken to pointing out what it calls Mr. Romney’s shifting stances on immigration, and his lack of specificity on any workable alternative.

Mr. McCain’s speech is to be delivered today in Florida, where a large number of Cuban-American Republicans have a different perspective on the immigration issue. While he does not mention Mr. Romney by name in the speech, McCain advisers say Mr. Romney is the target of the criticism.

“I would hope that any candidate for president would not suggest doing nothing,” Mr. McCain plans to say. “And I would hope they wouldn’t play politics for their own interests if the cost of their ambition was to make this problem even harder to solve. To want the office so badly that you would intentionally make our country’s problems worse might prove you can read a poll or take a cheap shot, but it hardly demonstrates presidential leadership.”

“Pandering for votes on this issue, while offering no solution to the problem, amounts to doing nothing,” Mr. McCain plans to say. “And doing nothing is silent amnesty.”

.......Rudy is headed over to the Vietnam memorial to claim that there was no need for those 58,000+ Americans to die.......up to Gettysburg and tell the Pennsylvania voters that there was far too much bloodshed there, and he would have stopped that, just as he did on 9-11.......

And then, to reinforce his globalist bona fides, Rooty is going to Greece to tell how he would have stopped the Peloponessian Wars.

The point of the post was that McCain is not only a traitor, he is a coward. Give them amnesty and they won’t riot....sheesh.

They really screwed him up in Nam.

It's amazing to me that McCain and Romney are spending so much energy fighting with each other, and totally ignoring the party's biggest flaw -- Rudy Giuliani.

Operation Get Rudy To Have A Meltdown Bigger Than Howard Dean's (OGRTHAMBTHD) has been pushed back until after Labor Day at the earliest.

Has Rudy heard about the Crusades yet?

Probably------but don't forget amnesty.

Rooty's priority is the Spanish-American War ---- he's headed to Mexico to beg forgiveness for the battles of Manila Bay, Santiago, and San Juan Hill.....and to show how sorry he is, Rooty will sign over Texas, Arizona and New Mexico as reparation.

Rudy McRomney may very well be the Republican nominee, but they simply cannot win the election as their nomination will permanently and irrevocably split the Republican party.

I think if Rudy looks closely, he could offer amnesty to all those Muslims and Christians that fought during the Crusades, and end the War on Terror immediately.

McCain is reduced to a big fat red herring and strawman argument.

There are alternatives. His bill amounts to a real do-nothing solve-nothing approach. It doesnt stop future illegal immigration. It certainly does punish - rather it rewards - previous lawbreakers. It doesnt secure the border, but does a fraction of what is needed there.

The real answer:
1. Secure the border - FULLY.
2. Enforce immigration law in the workplace and with local law enforcement.
3. Create more emloyment-based immigration and less chain migration.

... this is not what the open borders folks want. So they undremine real reform and instead put forth this fake reform that makes things worse and worse.

McCain is destroying the tiny smattering of credibility he has left with his tissue of lies. I am a rock-solid hardcore Republican and I will do everything to defeat him in the primary and I am at the point where I wouldnt care if he won were he the nominee.

“McCain is letting Bush be the wind under his wings — in matters where Bush has the power — Iraq and immigration.”

Bush has NO POWER on immigration ... he speak on immigration and his poll ratings go down. it now rests with the LEFT-WING DEMOCRATS AND LA RAZA. And Bush handed the power right to them by being too desperate to sign anything no matter how bad it is.

...Mitt Romney, by accusing him of “pandering for votes” in opposing the measure

If only Romney really was opposing it significantly. His appearance with Mark Levin was milquetoast. And Levin was slow-pitching right over the plate for him. Mitt bunted.

As far as I can tell, the "far" left Democrats and La Raza are against this bill. They (the Dems) may be our only hope to stop it.

Meanwhile, those were good points you made in your post.
