The fact is -- the immigration bill will probably pass ths week. Will this give McCain a political victory because he was "right" about current events?
McCain is letting Bush be the wind under his wings -- in matters where Bush has the power -- Iraq and immigration.
What do you think?
I will not vote for McCain. I don’t care who runs against him.
A counter proposal, John? How about enforcing the existing law and truly securing our borders. Easy, huh?
No Republican nominee should try toboost his campaign by bashing another Republican. That just helps the Dems.
If that is McCain's strategy, he is in worse shape than I thought! It's amazing to me that McCain and Romney are spending so much energy fighting with each other, and totally ignoring the party's biggest flaw -- Rudy Giuliani.
"This Senate immigration bill falls short of the American public's expectations for a fair and workable solution on the problem of illegal immigration. Pressing on with a flawed approach that isn't equitable toward legal immigration is not a step in the direction towards progress.
McCain once again goes after the wrong target. And again, his plane will be shot out from under him.
Well, McCain said in Iowa that if we start deporting illegals we could have riots like in France. Guess he is more scared of the illegals than the American citizen.
That tells me all I need to know about him.
Hopefully MeCain will get mad and take his immigration bill home!
McVain could at least be fair and attack Duncan Hunter too. His condemnations will only help Romney and Hunter could use the help more.
Rudy McRomney may very well be the Republican nominee, but they simply cannot win the election as their nomination will permanently and irrevocably split the Republican party.
McCain is reduced to a big fat red herring and strawman argument.
There are alternatives. His bill amounts to a real do-nothing solve-nothing approach. It doesnt stop future illegal immigration. It certainly does punish - rather it rewards - previous lawbreakers. It doesnt secure the border, but does a fraction of what is needed there.
The real answer:
1. Secure the border - FULLY.
2. Enforce immigration law in the workplace and with local law enforcement.
3. Create more emloyment-based immigration and less chain migration.
... this is not what the open borders folks want. So they undremine real reform and instead put forth this fake reform that makes things worse and worse.
McCain is destroying the tiny smattering of credibility he has left with his tissue of lies. I am a rock-solid hardcore Republican and I will do everything to defeat him in the primary and I am at the point where I wouldnt care if he won were he the nominee.
“McCain is letting Bush be the wind under his wings — in matters where Bush has the power — Iraq and immigration.”
Bush has NO POWER on immigration ... he speak on immigration and his poll ratings go down. it now rests with the LEFT-WING DEMOCRATS AND LA RAZA. And Bush handed the power right to them by being too desperate to sign anything no matter how bad it is.
McWHO?
to offer counterproposals explaining what they would do with the nations illegal immigrants,....The old nut. Just enforce the amnesty law of 1986.
Don't give up calling your reps and senators and complaining about the bill, however. There's still a slight chance they might listen. Right now Bush and his RINO contingent are not listening nor do they care for our conservative opinions.
‘The entire article describes an interesting political gamble that McCain is launching today in Florida — by directly condeming Romney over immigration. ‘
McCain’s campaign is crashing, this is a hail mary at best. It won’t work, for the simple fact McCain was despised by conservatives - rightly so - for dozens upon dozens of issues, like CFR for example.
“The fact is — the immigration bill will probably pass ths week. Will this give McCain a political victory because he was “right” about current events? “
I’m not so sure the Amnesty bill will ever pass. We’ll see.
As for the second part, NO, it won’t make any difference. Even without the Amnesty bill, McCain had no chance of gaining the nomination. I suspect he’s recently realized that, and being McCain, he will now attempt to smear any GOP candidate that does have a chance....because he’s now in the same position Bob ‘Its My Turn, Damnit!’ Dole found himself in in 1996.
‘McCain is letting Bush be the wind under his wings — in matters where Bush has the power — Iraq and immigration. ‘
Pssssst. Even those of us that voted for the President twice don’t support his Amnesty bill, and we are pretty upset that the President in effect ‘coasted’ in Iraq til the day after he lost both the House and Senate. Firing Rummy the day after just made the ‘base’ even angrier, not to mention the House and Senate members think if it had been done BEFORE the election, they might have held onto one or the other.
‘What do you think?’
I think McCain is toast, and my President has lost his freakin mind.
I think Mccain is a... I’m not allowed to use language like that on Free Republic. I would never, never vote for this man. I would stay home first or vote 3rd party. Also, I am not convinced the immigration bill will pass; the house is getting very cold feet and even some Senators are reconsidering the cost of supporting this bill in terms of their political futures.
