Britain pulls plug on Al’s big climate change show (Live Earth power stunt)
Times UK ^ | 6/3/07 | Maurice Chittenden

IT WAS intended to be the symbolic gesture at a global series of rock concerts next month to alert people to climate change. Al Gore, the former US presidential candidate turned climate doomsayer, had wanted a massive switch-off of lights by television audiences, but the National Grid has vetoed the idea.

The inconvenient truth, it says, is that the power surge when people switched their lights back on could cause disruptions in supply and even endanger hospital patients on life support machines.

Live Earth will be a series of concerts, modelled on Live Aid and and Live 8, aimed at raising awareness about the threat from global warming.

As many as 12 concerts across seven continents featuring the likes of Madonna and Genesis and 100 other acts are planned over 24 hours, including one at a research station in Antarctica.

The organisers have so far struggled to find a clear-cut way of conveying their main message. Even rock performers have criticised the concept.

Roger Daltrey, of the Who, said another concert would simply waste fuel; Bob Geldof, who helped to organise Live Aid and Live 8, said people were already aware of the greenhouse effect; while Matt Bellamy, front man of the rock band Muse, labelled it “private jets for climate change”.

Ahhh... The liberal mind. Can't think ahead to save it's life. If there were no conservatives the liberals would all die of starvation, exposure, scurvy, or some other easily controlled malady due to lack of inspiration, lack of rational thought, etc.

Think of a liberal being attacked by a lion. To enamored of the beauty of the lion attacking him to even step out of the way.

This can’t go on anymore. It is way to obnoxious. It has to stop.

That didn't come out the way I wanted it to.

Think of the liberal being attacked by a lion. He stands there so enamored of the majesty and beauty of an attacking lion; so awed by nature's way that it doesn't dawn on him he is being attacked until he's half eaten.

The UK did algore a favor. By banning the gimmick, they saved him from the embarrassment of 200 teenagers turning their lights out.

It never will. There is a better chance political correctness will end first.

Ah, “Goofus and Gallant”. This is the most pathetic part of the article:

“Deprived of their concept of creating a mass blackout, the Live Earth organisers will rely instead on the spoof rock band Spinal Tap to help the public see the light on global warming.

The band, whose guitarist Nigel Tufnel notoriously insisted on turning his speakers beyond the maximum 10 to 11, will be joined on stage by Ricky Gervais, the comedian.

Rob Reiner, director of the film which launched Spinal Tap in 1984, said that in the routine for Live Earth the band initially struggles to grasp the concept of climate change. “Nigel thought it was because he was wearing too much clothing – and that if he just took his jacket off it would be cooler,” Reiner said. “

Of course! Let's switch our lights on and off and suck more energy off the grid than normal and cause power surges! What a buffoon! When exactly did Gore get his degree in science!?

It was the electric distribution company, not algore, who was concerned about the surge. Turning lights on and off randomly happens all the time and is no big deal. If enough people participate and throw their switches at the same time, though, I can imagine that could potentially disrupt things. I'd say it's a reasonable concern.

I realize that. I called him a buffoon for not realizing that.

“IT WAS intended to be the symbolic gesture at a global series of rock concerts next month to alert people to climate change.”

Well, then he should have held those rock concerts someplace else like maybe the Amazon rain forest. I suppose it’s possible there are a few undiscovered tribes who haven’t heard about global warming yet.

I’ll be in Shanghai on that day, and if there was a good lineup I’d go see it (Roger Waters last year was amazing at the Stadium).

Of course, they STILL haven’t announced a lineup for Shanghai... When you have trouble getting acts to the biggest city in Asia, you know your show’s a dog...
