U.S. forces have begun conducting joint patrols with Sunni resistance fighters in the Sunni enclave of Amiriyah where a group of local leaders have banded together to fight al-Qaeda, U.S. Army officials said Tuesday.

Major Chris Rogers, executive officer of the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division, responsible for Amiriyah, said soldiers acting on information provided by the fighters had detained five suspected al-Qaeda members in overnight raids and were holding them for questioning.

He said the group had decided it did not want to be known as ‘the Baghdad Patriots’ the name given to it by U.S. forces.

“They decided they want to be called freedom fighters,” Rogers said.

1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division, the Black Knights. Please pray for them.

1st Battalion, 5th United States Cavalry Regiment was formed in 1855. From its inception, it was an elite unit, with the Secretary of War Jefferson Davis hand-picking its members from a dozen states. In its 144-year history, the Battalion has participated in nine wars and has been awarded 62 campaign streamers. 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry and it's companies have been awarded over 20 unit citations and boast 45 members of the battalion who have received the nation's highest award for bravery, the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The "Black Knights" have since transitioned from horseback to Bradley Fighting Vehicles, after serving valiantly in the Second World War, Korea, and Vietnam. In 1986, as the U.S. Army's only combined arms balanced Task Force, Task Force 1-5 CAV combined the sheer guts of the Infantry, the rapid firepower of the 25mm Bushmaster, and the awesome firepower of the M1 tank. The test of the Combined Arms Mechanized Battalion organization came in 1990, when the "Black Knights" deployed to Saudi Arabia and prepared to battle the Iraqi Army. 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry was the first unit to conduct a ground attack on the Iraqi Army on 20 February 1991 and went on to win more awards for valor than any other unit in the Division.

1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry received the Division order to deploy to Bosnia in support of Operation Joint Forge. The "Black Knights" trained and prepared for this mission assignment. The Battalion participated in several training events, including gunnery, platoon and company STX, and culminated with a two week Mission Readiness Exercise at the Joint Readiness Training Center, Ft. Polk, Louisiana. This was done while the Battalion continued to support the no notice deployment requirement of the Division.

On October 7, 1998, The First Cavalry Division assumed authority of the MultiNational Division (North) area of operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina from the 1st Armored Division. The division was the first CONUS based division to assume this mission. As part of the 1st Cavalry Division, 1-5 CAV's mission was to conduct operations to enforce the military provisions set forth by the Dayton Accords.

Task Force 1-5 CAV in Bosnia consisted of a Headquarters Company, two mechanized infantry companies, three armor companies, a military intelligence company, an engineer company and numerous slice elements and attachments. The Task Force patrolled its sector of Multinational Division (North) as a part of Stabilization Force Five (SFOR5) from 20 March 1999 to 20 September 1999.

In order to conduct successful peace missions while in theater, soldiers were extensively trained on mine awareness, country and cultural customs and checkpoint and convoy operations. Training was conducted on all levels including individual readiness training, leader/staff training, and a Mission Rehearsal Exercise (MRE).

During the six months, squads and platoons from the 1st CAV Division conducted over 9,000 combat patrols and escorted over 1000 convoy movements over some of the most rugged terrain and austere conditions.

The soldiers conducted hundreds of weapons storage site inspections, established vehicle checkpoints designed to monitor and control movement and often conducted searches for and seizures of illegal contraband and weapons.

1-5 CAV Soldiers served at Both Camp Dobol (TF 1-5 CAV) and Camp Demi (TF 2-12 CAV). Significant events of the rotation included a Serbian Air Attack (2 MIG's downed by US Air Force), a hand grenade thrown at a patrol, a rocket attack against US personnel and several demonstrations. Through all of this TF 1-5 soldiers performed professionally and safely, exchanged experiences with both locals and other NATO forces and helped foster a safe and healing environment for this war torn country.

When directed, the mission of 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment is to provide combat ready forces for NCA-directed contingency operations. On order, deploys by land, sea, and/or air within 24 to 72 hours of notification in order to support NCA directives. On order, conducts operations to achieve NCA directives.

I do think that report was actually CNN, am I wrong? If so, that’s obviously progress. I believe there has been some reporting on this, but it’s nothing like the steady drum beat of negative and defeatist reports that have been so effective at undermining the war among the America public. There is one thing for sure. The destruction of al Qadea in Iraq is can only be prevented by the the MSM and the DNC. They’ll have to hurry.

"freedom fighters ah." Well good for them. Let them start appreciating what GWB has harped on for some five years. Either they cast off the yoke of Islam and their multi-millinium screwed up cultures and realize their lives have some worth, or they will continue to move about the desert with no keels.
Of course we don't really want them to get to savvy, and sophisticated. The American population is becoming to dumbed down to compete with a future nation of smart Arabs.

This country really has a problem. Or perhaps I should say we who can see what has taken place over the past forty plus years have a problem.

Apparently, some people consider that name to be more than just a "bumper sticker."

The changes have been disappointing. America has been desensitized to its own self-worth

The most proudest I have felt of my country was just after 9/11 when America displayed its patriotism openly and didn't care about liberals criticizing us for boasting it.

I hadn't seen such patriotism since I was a child when we used to have the The Pledge of Allegiance in school and flags proudly displayed everywhere.

Disgusting! These self proclaimed freedom fighters are the same ones who have been ethnically cleansing this area from its shia inhabitants. I personally know people who abandoned their homes and forced to move.
You can’t rely on militias to bring law and order. If there are decent ones among them, which I doubt it, then they should join the local police and regular forces.

I understand and can relate very much to your frustration. It is sad that many patriotic Americans have to work very hard at reminding complacent people that if we are attacked again that the Divided We Fall divisions created by the left wont help us when counting our dead. It takes a lot of work to keep America United As We Stand.

Freedom Isn't Free

So many still really do not have a clue. I hear Marines and Airborne guys of the past calling GWB an *sshole, and inventing this war for his benefit. Lots of ill informed people out there, thanks to the carefull craft the L/MSM practice. When I patiently try to explain they could have the opportunity made to get the other side of the picture, e.g. view what we read each day, they get pissed off and defensive. In short, we could get bombed again and they simply would blam it on GWB. The mental sets have been established. We live in dangerous times as many on our side have cried for a number of years. Off course I can think back forty five some years and remember how my conservative republican uncle attempted to clue my father in on how unions for instance where going to ruin our businesses eventually. Of course my father read a lot, lib papers, and listened to the demorats. He had not a clue.
