ROSTOCK, Germany -- President Bush feels "terrible" for the family of I. Lewis Libby but does not intend to intervene now in the case of the former top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney who was sentenced to prison Tuesday, the White House said.
Bush was informed by aides of Libby's sentencing in Washington to 2 1/2 years in prison after he got on Air Force One to fly from the Czech Republic to Germany for the G-8 summit of industrialized nations.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Dana Perino came back on the president's aircraft to relay Bush's reaction to the sentence.
"The president said he felt terrible for the family, especially for his wife and kids," Perino said.
"He says he feels terrible for them, he's sorry for all that they're going through," she added. Asked if Bush included Libby in the statement, Perino replied, "Yes."
She said that he would not comment any further at this time.
Bush was informed of the sentence just after Air Force One took off from Prague for Germany. He was given the news by chief of staff Joshua Bolten and senior counselor Dan Bartlett.
"The president has not intervened so far in this or any other criminal matter, so he's going to decline to do so now as well," Perino said.
Bush has made no secret of his fondness for Libby who was a presidential aide as well as chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney.
The president, who leaves office on Jan 20, 2009, has never ruled out a pardon for Libby.
Fred thompson is an actor.
I have grown to despise Bush!
It does not surprise one anymore. Those 2 INS agents are still sitting in jail.
Bush loses further points with his base.
actually he is a lawyer and ex-senator too but feel free to denigrate all you need to get sated
me too...we need some of those angry conservatives bumperstickers using the 1-20-08 lingo
“Fred thompson is an actor?”
point?
so was Ronald Reagan
He did and should, What is your point?
Wardaddy, forget about this globalist nerd.....we need to relentlessly pound the Senators and Congresscritters...Bush is a lost cause!!
It has always been said that George values loyalty.I seriously doubt that he values loyalty, when he throws
Scooter to the dogs and says he feels sorry. There he shows as much Christian Love as Bill Clinton
I feel free to do so. I don’t trust him.
As said by someone on another thread why would Libby want a pardon? A pardon indicates guilt and Libby didn’t do anything to be guilty for.
Agreed. Look where loyalty to Bush gets you...30 months.
Who you do trust?
Fred seems like a guy who says what he thinks. My instinct, which is usually pretty good (except for W turning out backwards) says Fred is someone to trust.
“intervene now”
doesn’t rule out, “intervene later”. The case is in appeal.
I’m not convinced either but his acting is not why.
I fear he is a bit moderate for my taste....especially after Bush’s cliff dive....I’m wary...but I’m still hoping.
I like Tancredo, admire Hunter but realize that Thompson has the best shot of the top tier....and is closest to my views.
But....damn....surveying the landscape after Bush feels almsot as wounded as after Clinton.
I will always greatly resent Bush for that. He has damaged conservatism in ways I doubt I’ll see recovery from in my lifetime
I like Hunter since you asked.
And you are an idiot. What’s your point?
Bush needs to start acting like a man again and quit worrying about his Presidency which is coming to an end. I don’t understand the man anymore. It is like he has no soul anymore.
