Republicans Aim at Clinton, Not Each Other
The Republican field sans Fred Thompson - met in Manchester, NH for another debate last night and while none of the candidates blew it, nor did any of them make lasting impressions against the other. What they did do is ramp up their bashing of Democratic front-runner Sen. Hillary Clinton, which is good news. All of these guys know that whoever the Republican victor becomes in short order will be running against a Democrat that will be the favorite. While we didnt personally watch the debate (too many people on the stage at this point in our opinion), our friends at RedState.com have anointed former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee the victor. Itll be interesting at the next debate when Thompson should finally join the field. Most reports show that in addition to Clinton, the Republicans spent a lot of time bashing the president, mainly on Iraq, which at this point is a politically advantageous thing to do.
Immigration Bill Staled
Despite earlier reports indicating the contrary, it looks like the immigration bill is having troubles at passage after all. According to this report, Senators on both sides are adding amendments that ultimately may defeat the grant compromise of the likes of Ted Kennedy, John McCain and of course, President Bush.; a bill that so many of our readers hate, as do we. What the Republicans have failed to recognize and use to their advantage up until this point, however, is the fact that a defeat is a very, very good thing looking ahead to 2008. In fact, if the bill is defeated, the national GOP should use the defeat in all of its campaign materials as an example of something good happening in Washington. Sure it will tick off the president, but that shouldnt matter. Conservatives hate the bill and we might argue so do a majority of Independent voters. A defeated immigration bill might be just what the GOP needs to finally end its post-2006 election malaise.
Pardon Libby
Finally, the GOPNation.com jumps on the Pardon Libby bandwagon this morning. President Bushs standing amongst his base could go a long way at recovery if he would forget about letting the wheels of justice move ever-so slowly and simply pardon Lewis Scooter Libby. Of course, for now, the president isnt listening to us, which is a regular theme of this White House.
Enjoy the day.
They were WAY too easy on him if you ask me.
Military Industrial Complex.
Not only should he pardon Libby, he should pardon Liddy (for Watergate)
Whoever gets the nomination needs to clean house in the RNC right quick so they can get the anti-illegal immigration message out. Then they might have a chance. The reins must be taken from Bush’s hands.
There are a are a number of other anti's in that bunch as well. How about anti-Christian Conservatives, anti-small government, anti-enforcing existing laws, anti-democratic republic/states' rights types?
