Republican Talking Points Against Democrats
Original with Author | 6/6/2007 | Econjack

In a recent Democrat debate aired on CNN, Hillary made a comment to the effect that: "...some must pay so that others may benefit." This is the cornerstone of most Democrat policies and has been for years. The Democrat philosophy has always been to tax the rich and give to the poor. Stated differently, tax the productive members of society so the State can support the unproductive members of society. This Robin Hood attitude by the Democrats needs to be exploited by the Republicans.

The Democrats always see income redistribution as the only way to help the poor...and that is their Achilles heel. The Democrats see the economic pie as fixed in size and the only way to help one group is to take it away from another. To the Democrats, it's always a zero-sum game...one winner, one loser.

It shouldn't be that way.

The Republicans need to hit back with the benefits of tax cuts for all people, regardless of their income bracket.

First, it is totally politically incorrect to ask: What have the poor done for you lately? I can't think of a thing. However, if asked the question: What have the rich done for you lately, I could respond with a litany of things from job creation to charity efforts. Since politicians don't have the stomach for such statements, the Republicans should adopt the following slogan:

A rising tide lifts all boats.

They should hammer home the idea that tax breaks for the productive members of society stimulate the economy for all members. Tax cuts create new jobs and puts money in the pockets of society's workers. They should point out that the Democrat policies of increased taxes reaches into their pockets and takes their money from them, part of which ends up in a frozen block in some bureaucrat's freezer. Reduced taxes gives people more money to spend, which increases demand for all goods and services and, therefore, increases the demand for labor, creating new jobs for society. All members of society benefit from economic growth...all boats are lifted.

The Republicans' need to hit hard on the idea that increased taxes deprives Americans of free choice as to how their income is spent. One motto they might use is:

Who knows how to spend your money better: You or some politician in Washington?

The average American identifies with this and I think the Republicans would gain more votes than they would lose by appealing to the productive members of society.

Finally, Republicans have got to stop being door mats for the Democrats. I think most of us agree that the Republicans have not done anything to offset the Democrat agenda, nor have they done anything to point out the destructive nature of the existing and proposed Democrat policies. Indeed, the Republicans did little to promote their agenda when they had power. No wonder so many of us are disappointed with the Republican Party to the point where many of us are changing our voter registration. If the Republicans hope to avoid a disaster in 2008, they need to wake up, take off the kidd gloves, and start fighting back...now.

didn’t Robin Hood steal from the over-taxing government to give to the poor?

Only about 25% of Americans would see net financial benefits if all Clinton’s class warfare measures were enacted, and that’s leaving out the likely damage they would cause to the economy.

"...some must pay so that others may benefit."

The most successful argument I've had against this argument is to simply state, which would feed more people, taking the seeds away from the farmer and feeding the people the seeds, or letting the farmer plant the seeds and produce more crop..

An argument I use against wealth redistribution is simply: Does the system still work if nobody is productive?

Great article with lots of common-sense points.

Trouble is, the top priorities of the GOP/RNC is to:
1) Nominate McCain for President in '08
2) Ram this shamnesty bill through to quick passage with NO discussion
3) Move to the left to show dhimmocrats that grass-roots conservatives are irrelevant, and

4) Solicit donation$....

Exactly, so why aren't our representatives saying that in a loud and angry voice on our behalf?

the left often like to use the Robin Hood analogy, but it can be rebuted quite easily. The rich, the nobles back then were the government

I’ve always wondered why we don’t have some good marketing people on our side.

This was Karl Marx’ socialist philosophy and musing long before the U.S.Dems latched onto it.

I read her book many years ago and it changed my politics quite a lot. I have the name of the book on the tip of my tongue but cannot spit it out.

Yes. But the government put a spin on it. He stole from the tax collectors and most of the money the collectors had came from the rich. So, Robbin Hood stole from the people and they all had to pay the tax again. The government is only collecting the money to spend for them in this case.

I agree. After all, this isn't rocket science. The Republicans have done a miserable job of pointing out the benefits of tax cuts and reduced entitlements. I find it amazing that the Republicans couldn't even sell (without a major fight) the extension of the Bush tax cuts. Reagan was so effective because he could communicate such things. No one has stepped forward and even made an attempt to fill those shoes.

WE have some real successes to point to and they are better than theoretical arguments. Both welfare reform and Katrina relocation have measurably improved people’s lives a lot more than a piddly government benefit ever will.
On a theoretical level it is just one opinion vs another. But when you evaluate the results, free enterprise beats welfare every time.
