The Republicans’ Hispanic Delusion

George Bush’s political strategists have long promoted amnesty for illegal aliens as a device for increasing the Republican vote among Hispanics. They also warn that denying rights to illegal aliens will hurt the GOP. A Hispanic backlash in California after Proposition 187 (the 1994 voter initiative that denied illegal aliens many publicly funded services) turned the state from red to blue, they claim; a similar rout awaits the party if it does not embrace liberal immigration policies.

There is scant evidence for either of these ideas. The 1986 amnesty signed by President Reagan did not trigger a Latino surge into the Republican Party. And California’s Hispanics leaned as strongly Democratic before Prop. 187 as after it. Hispanic voting patterns in California have held steady since 1988—they vote approximately two-to-one for Democratic presidential candidates. California’s shift from red to blue would have happened with or without Prop. 187, as defense-industry whites left the state, replaced by liberal high-tech professionals, and as the Hispanic portion of the electorate tripled from 7 percent to 21 percent.

I think the whole “increase Republican voters” thing is a smokescreen to get the party faithful to swallow it. Its about cheap labor for big business, nothing more.

Stopping the influx of illegals is NOT about politics. It’s about our soverignty and enforcing the law. Blockheads!

I just called the whitehouse comment line and unleashed, nicely. I got a real person on the phone. I suggest everyone call and express their displeasure about this with Bush.

Only if the nation becomes a majority of hispanics. Why do Bush, Rove and all the others who are pushing this bill think that the hispanic vote is the future of the U.S?

Bush doesn’t care. The best bet is to contact Senators and Representatives and hope they listen.

And it won’t even be cheap! Imagine all those workers suddenly subject to the minimum wage law and gasp! unionized.

“A Hispanic backlash in California after Proposition 187”

There was no backlash here after prop 187. In fact, Gray Davis ran for election with the promise to support the followup lawsuits to the Supreme court. Once elected, Davis stopped all support for the voter approved law and let it die in the court. Recent polls show if on the ballot again, it would pass again by 78%

It’s all about supplying a new peasant class

The correct answer to the odious question "Why do you hate Mexicans" is "Why do you want to create a new peasant class?"

Many of us will have children, grandchildren that will sink into that peasant class. Not all good, hardworking people are rich or can insulate thier family from living in the neighborhoods or attending the schools of the immigrant horde that our politicians want to unleash on us.

“Its about cheap labor for big business, nothing more.”

There definitely is something more about it. This idea of globalization is what drives the dems, RINOs and Bush to sell out the country in favor of open or no borders. In an “ideal” one-world society, the desire for sovereignty and national identity will not be tolerated. Courtesy of socialism/communism and the UN.

I think the GOP leadership views it as a train wreck no matter what happens.

The 20 million illegals are having kids, and in 10 to 20 years it wont matter what we do.

Put on the party hats and whistles, and enjoy the train ride before it crashes. We’re all going 200 MPH into the concrete wall (Bankruptcy), Democrats included.

I don’t buy this argument. Take a look at the Fortune 100 and try to find a company that would need uneducated, illegal alien employees.
