QUEBEC -- Quebecers will be distinct from other Canadians in another way starting this fall: they'll have the country's first designated "carbon tax" to help fight global warming.
Natural Resources Minister Claude Bechard, who announced Wednesday that a 0.8-cent-a-litre carbon tax will come into force on Oct 1, added that he hopes the oil companies, which are reporting record profits, would absorb the tax and not pass it on to the consumer. Oil industry spokespeople were unavailable for comment late Wednesday afternoon.
The tax, Bechard said, is based on the "polluter pays" principle. "That is not negotiable," the minister said.
The carbon tax will raise $200 million a year to finance Quebec's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and favour public transit.
Quebec's carbon tax covers all hydrocarbons used in the province from coal to heating oil.
The amount of the carbon tax varies according to the amount of carbon dioxide each fuel produces.

I’ve decided to get my carbon credits another way. For the first 50 miles of a trip I will drive l0 mph under the speed limit, which will give me a carbon credit that I can use in the next 50 miles, when I will drive l0 mph over the speed limit. Sounds good to me! Or I can sell that 50 miles of carbon credits. I plan to hold my breath for 2 hours every day, and never eat beans. How’m I doin? These carbon credits are going to add up fast!

The Green Party of Canada (a federal party, with no seats in Parliament) just proposed a carbon tax 20 times higher than Quebec’s — one that would double in a few years. That would add about $1.00 to the price of a U.S. gallon of gas. The “inconvenient truth” that the GW alarmists don’t want people to know, is that’s the minimum their agenda is going to cost us.
The Quebec government wants to get some money from the petro companies — it really bothers them to see the billions that flow into Alberta every year from their consumers. The oil companies might have to absorb some of this tax, in areas near Quebec borders, where Quebecois drivers have an alternative.

Tabernac! Maudit Anglais Halbertans!
Let the Eastern bastards freeze in the dark!
Oh wait, I’m an eastern bastard, but, Quebec is even more eastern so they can freeze twice as hard.
Did you see 20/20 last week? The government takes more than 72 billion in taxes compared to 62 billion by the oil companies, who is doing the gouging its the government.
