It’s always interesting when outsiders write a book about Southerners. Good responses.
The fact one man has grown up being taught these men are larger than life, and another has been taught they were traitors is unfortunate.
But it's hard to see much admirable in the slavery-obsessed self-interested southern political class behind secession. They were the true enemies of the South in the 1860s.

Some folks north of the mason-dixon line haven’t quite accepted that these two men were great Americans. I don’t worry about this too much. Lee and Jackson certainly wouldn’t have been concerned.

Yes, there were big differences in the three classes in the South, and people like Longstreet weren't interested in preserving slavery.

My day job IS writing, and I make a darn good living at it. Funny thing, we find I sell TONS of books in the south. I’m glad we are “outing” all you neoConfeds, though.
Sonny I'm not giving it. I was responding to another poster what I did with your 'book'.
My ancestors fought bravely for what they believed in. And that was to be left alone and live their lives. But a damn yankee overstepped his bounds and interfered in that life. They went to teach him a lesson. They didn't want to overthrow the government, they wanted to leave. Which before the tyrant was a legal and viable solution. The damn New England states threatened it several times before. As usual Southerners act instead of talk big. And held off a nation much larger than itself for four years.
So frankly you can take your comments about Southerners being 'traitors' and shove it.

What’s a “neoConfed”? Perhaps you should clarify with all your exceptional writing skills that bring you such a good standard of living.
Be sure to make your description clear and concise, so that a simple southern boy like myself can understand what you mean. I want a full and complete meaning in your context.

No you didn’t. If you mean the “south” then you may be surprised to find out that we are, in fact, part of the United States of America. In many ways, like prevalence of military service, we are better Americans than most other regions of the country.
That’s your problem. You haven’t gotten over the Civil War. It’s over. We’re ALL Americans now. Some of the greatest Americans, like Lee and Jackson would give you a boot-to-the-behind for your attitude, and it would be well-deserved.

No doubt about that - Kennedy said they wouldn't give up or give in, and Lindsey Graham has said they would attach it to another bill if necessary.

There should be a bylaw on FR against sneaking either 'evo/crevo' or 'war of aggression/secession' into any thread originating on another topic.
As best I can tell this kidnapping arose when someone took offense because his favorite senator got caught championing reconquesta under the Kennedy-Bush banner. Too bad, because Sen. Kyle might have done fine in the past but, like several other pubbies, joining in this coup was wrong, hypocritical, and should shut out his chances in future. Period, sorry if it dents someone's dogma.
Meanwhile, the reasons for Southern secession are virtually moot:
The central issue of the (not a) Civil War is simply that, up until someone actually did it, secession was an accepted element in the relationship between several sovereign states. Northern states talked about it, Southern states did it, big government (and the Republican party) arose from it. I know that "confederation" was dropped and the concept made less clear - but, regardless of any word changes intended to correct the original articles, not a single state in the union believed secession was out of bounds until economics, propaganda, and power made it so.
(Note here that economics, propaganda, and power are not value judgments, they are facts and imply neither approbation nor praise)
If you want a 'property' based cause for the War of Secession try real estate - it started over ownership of a rock in Charleston harbor.
Now, back to the actual subject: Kyle IS an embarrassment, just as the original 'offender' pointed out - an embarrassment just like Goldwater and McPain. And that comes from someone who has spent far more time in Arizona than in several Southern states combined.
Still closer to the original subject: "immigration reform" isn't going away, we are in for a year or so of street protests, political closed doors, and rewritten proposals eager to sound better than the last one. Let's concentrate on that, shall we?

Whether in Mississippi, Georgia, Virginia or Arizona, you are still in the United States of America (even if unopposed illegal immigrant invasion makes it seem otherwise). THAT was the point, my scribbling friend. You did not grow up in “confederate” territory, you grew up in the United States.
This simpleton southern boy sure has to explain a lot of things to someone who writes words for a living!
