MONTGOMERY -- State Sen. Charles Bishop hit Sen. Lowell Barron on the floor of the Senate this afternoon, saying Barron called him an s...o...b.
The Senate was in recess when Bishop, a Republican from Arley, and Barron, a Democrat from Fyffe, started an animated conversation. Bishop suddenly hit Barron in the face, and Barron fell back onto a desk.
Patrick Harris, assistant secretary of the Senate, said he saw Bishop hit Barron and quickly grabbed Bishop and pulled him back.
Bishop in an interview later said Barron called him a s...o...b, so he hit Barron in the face.
"If he calls me that again, it'll happen again," Bishop said.
I smell a lawsuit oncoming.
It’s not nice to insult a mans mother. I agree, bravo Senator Bishop!
Well, it could be worse; during colonial times they challenged each other to duels....
Go, BIshop!! And he is unrepentant! Got to love that man. Same temperament as Dick Cheney. Would just love to know what preceded the punch.
Barron’s a jerk, good for Bishop.
I am sorry, but this is inexcusable for the mere phrase “sob”.
If the R & D were reversed this would be the top thread and people would be calling for someones head. At the least, let’s be consistent.
As we say here in Alabama : “That boy was more in need of an ass whuppin than any man on earth”
ping! Thought you might like to see that our little state incident is now in national news. ;)
“Well, it could be worse; during colonial times they challenged each other to duels....”
Worse?! That would be better, for us. One less career politician, no matter who wins.
In Alabama, you uphold your family pride. You are going to deal with a "Jury of your peers". That jury would not award the agitator money, nor would that jury convict in a criminal matter due to "Provocation".
They’re STATE Senators so who cares?
You ain't from around here boy are ya.
LOL! A truer statement couldn’t be spoken. I hope Bishop doesn’t receive any repercussions from this.
So anytime someone is called a name, a fight erupts down there? You and I both know that is not true.
“So anytime someone is called a name, a fight erupts down there? You and I both know that is not true.”
If it’s not true, it should be. Some things are best handled by the individuals, not the courts. If you knew that there was a high probability of getting a knuckle sandwich for calling someone an sob, you’d take a great deal of care before letting that fly, wouldn’t you?
But wouldn’t it seem reasonable that if someone punched you, you would be honor bound to punch him back?
Words were uttered. Violence does not need to be the result of this.
Welcome to The South. I live in Texas, but I can guarantee the same would happen here if one man insulted another's mother, in person or in public. There are certain customs and traditions which are held sacred by Southerners. Among them is that you never say anything bad about anybody's mama.
