Sorry for the shameless vanity. I posted it on another thread, but I thought it deserved greater exposure.
I think all my ideas deserve greater exposure, of course.

Now you’re not a brother, not a friend . . .
you’re nothing to me.

"Get somewhere close to 80% of Americans to oppose Ted Kennedy" More like "Get somewhere like 84% of Americans to oppose President Bush".

No.
Bush campaigned in 2000 and 2004 on doing exactly something like this, to solve the "immigration" problem "compassionately".
We need to keep a close eye on whether the Dims will try for an AWB renewal. GWB has also campaigned to betray us on assault weapons as well and we should be prepared for it.

Was Harriet Myers (sp?) strategery? No. We got a good result because we said NO. Hopefully the same will apply here. I wouldn’t put money on it, but existing law is better than the amnesty plan proposed by the Senate.

By promoting this bill, in one fell swoop President Bush has managed to:Yeah, he's one smart dude ...

This will end up ripping up more than a few Democrats and RINOs before it is over. I can see a lot of moonbats buying that it is a secret Rovian strategery. Let them stock up on tinfoil.

I dunno, I guess it could happen but I like your thinking.

If it is strategery, it is exceptionally subtle and devious, and would be a masterpiece. But they really couldn't possibly be that clever, could they? No, I don't believe it's possiblistic.

I have had the very same thought...gwb has wanted this forever, but to openly call the american people names who are against this....i thought this was a way to rally the base, and hopefully prevent 2006 from happening in 2008..

Was calling his entire base of loyal patriotic Conservatives a bunch of unamerican bigots also part of the cunning strategery?
Sorry I dont buy it.
Bush wanted this abominable bill real bad, and he still wants it. He doesnt give a rats tutu about the future, he just wants to placate his amigos in Mexico and blast the core of the Republican base who stood by him during the entire Iraq disaster.
He has lost me forever.

"Sarkozy just won in France by running against Chirac, who was the head of his own party." Um, No. Sarkozy ran against Royal. Chirac supported Sarkozy.
To: jebeier
I have also considered some of the possibilities you raised. I don’t think this was a deliberate strategery, however the fallout is most welcome.

And all it has cost him is a few points in the public opinion polls, =A few points in the opinion polls, and his ENTIRE base.
And with the way he pushed this bill so publicly and fiercely, he is just as tied to illegal immigration as his good buddy Ted.

I, for one, have never underestimated George Bush, and find your theory quite plausible.
He looks far down the road and sees what actions his opponents are likely to do and plans for it. He doesn’t dissuade his opponents action but lets them dig their own grave until they can no longer back track, they are in too deep.
Iraq and the WOT is one and immigration another and the Harriet Myers nomination was true genius.
IMO.
