PRAGUE, June 8, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - More than a year after the Czech President took a public stand against benefits for homosexual couples, including allowing them to raise children, public support for homosexual adoption has dropped.

A CVVM Czech poll published yesterday shows that public support for homosexual "marriage" and adoption by same-sex couples has decreased over the past two years. The Prague Daily Monitor reports that since 2005, the numbers supporting same-sex marriage went down from 42 to 36 percent. In the same amount of time, support of adoption by same-sex couples decreased by nearly 10 percent from almost one third to 22 percent of the population.

Last February, Czech President Vaclav Klaus made a public stand against homosexual marriage and adoption in parliament. The President vetoed a proposed law that would give added benefits to same-sex partners, allowing them to register their unions, raise children together and pass on inheritances.

The President contradicted majorities in both the upper and lower houses of parliament, saying, "Even if I as president did not have a clear opinion, I would insist that such marked intervention in the legal arrangement of human and especially partner and intimate relations must be supported by a majority of deputies." (http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2006/feb/06021707.html)

According to the poll, while 69 percent of people agreed that homosexual couples should be allowed to have registered unions, 57 percent disagreed with actual homosexual "marriage'. The Monitor reports on the results that, "Positive answers were most often given by the people knowing personally some gay man or lesbian woman, people aged 15 to 29 and those with good living standards. The idea was opposed by Roman Catholics, the elderly and those calling their living standards bad."

The same poll, which surveyed 1,132 Czechs over the age of 15, also reported that the majority of Czechs support euthanasia and that the vast majority is in favor of abortion.Czech Happenings reports, "nearly 15 percent of the respondents clearly supported euthanasia and 43 percent rather supported it, while 10 percent were clearly against it and 18 percent were rather against it."

Results show an unprecedented 72 percent who believe that "the woman alone has the right to decide about abortion" and only 1 percent who are definitively against abortion. According to these results, support for abortion in the Czech Republic is at its highest levels since 1990.
