Will Fred Thompson's voice destroy his chances of becoming President?

While it might seem trivial at this stage, you can't help wondering what the Democrat Party and mainstream press will make of the former Senator's Southern drawl over the next few months. Considering the stereotypes that Democrats and the press have peddled about Republicans in the past, it's very likely that Thompson's style of speaking will be mercilessly attacked on the campaign trail.

You just know the left is horrified by Thompson's Southern accent and background. "Progressives" have been engaged in a decades-long feud with the South, an area of the country they generally view as backward, bigoted, uneducated and uncultured. Like President Bush, Thompson has a personality that irritates the sensibilities of the Northeastern and cultural left.

If past performance is any indication of future actions, then it won't be long before op-ed columnists at the New York Times and Washington Post start writing articles about how Thompson's voice brings to mind the speeches of long-deceased segregationists. The left won't hesitate to suggest that Thompson's tone of voice will appeal to the rednecks and yahoos who allegedly dominate the GOP. The press will scour every Thompson speech to uncover evidence of supposed Southern bias--if you thought the 1980 attempt by the left to depict Ronald Reagan as anti-civil rights was bad, you haven't seen anything yet.

Once Thompson gets into the game, the left and the press will have another opportunity to express regional bigotry. When it comes to the South, the left is hopelessly stuck in the past; "progressives" will never abandon their image of the South as a haven of moonshine, mental mediocrity and minority-bashing. It will be extremely petty for the left and the press to attack Thompson's voice--but after all these years, we should expect the other side to be uncivil.

I remember in the early 60’s, the Knoxville Team was the Smokies. As far as I know, that is the original name, and after a couple of changes over time (I remember “K-Jays” specifically when they were a Toronto affiliate), they switched back to it before relocating up the road a ways and becoming the Tennessee Smokies.

Around here, “Vols” has always been associated with the University of Tennessee. I’ve never heard it used in any other context.

I wouldn't be at all suprised if the Left attacks Fred because of his accent. The liberal moonbats are already attacking him for being a lobbyist "for 1/3 of his life," for being a crazy man who would bring Armageddon (because he would refuse to take the nuclear option off the table for Iran), for being "mediocre" (beause as a Senator, he didn't pass a ton of legislation designed to morph our republic into a socialist utopia), for being an actor (Looney Clooney gooood - Fred Thompson baaaad), for being stupid (because everyone who isn't a liberal is "dumb"), for being too much like Bush ("crypto-facist"), for being too much like Reagan ("neo-facist"), for being lazy (like Bush and Reagan), for being phony (unlike the Clintons), for being a "fiscally irresponsible corporate shill" (because he supprts tax cuts), for "pandering" to the religious right (because he's against Roe v Wade), for "contempt for the rule of law" (because he wants to see Scooter Libby pardoned), for "reckless bellicosity" (bcause he supports Israel's right to defend herself), for robbing the cradle (they give Kucinich a pass, even though the age difference is greater between the little troll and his hippie bride than it is between Fred and Jeri)... and it goes on and on.

That's just stuff I've seen in last day or two. The deranged moonbat left is ramping up its hatred for Fred so much that by the time he's nominated, they will be in full rabies mode.

when "wee willie klintoon" was governor, i was in grad school & she was WELL-known in Little Rock to be a frequent denizen of the lesbian bar scene (key clubs).

fwiw, my elder daughter is from Mexico & now speaks Spanish with a full-fledged TEXICAN accent!!! (we adopted her as an older teenager.)

she sent me a post card from her vacation spot in Cuernavaca & said that her "Texican" speech IN Spanish was "strange-sounding" to her birth sisters/brothers!!! (in Austin, where she lives now, people ask her frequently which LOCAL high school she went to.)

evidently our Texican speech is easy to "pick up"!!!

Nevertheless, RedMontique (sp?) was right in correcting me. It was indeed the Nashville Vols, which played AA baseball in the Southern League.

Yep. Early Southerners were primarily of Scot/Irish descent, yankees were primarily British. They were fighting long before they arrived here.
