Excellent article. Ike was too liberal to suite my taste, but he got it right on this issue. And the “culture of corruption” issue associated with illegal immigrants is once again in full swing.

Earl Warren vs. Roberts and Alito - that’s one difference in Ike and GWB. Ike let the French and English down when they tried to take back the Suez. He was President during two ressions and an hourly wage rate of about 1.50 for people working anything but in a factory. Liberal Ike must have learned his politics from Monty.

Just an innocent but curious question: Is your view that Ike was too liberal based on empirical experiences or on something you read? Were you an observer of the Ike presidency and the times in which it took place? Ike was a lts of things, some excellent and some not. He was exactly the president needed during that period of post-war stress, Korea and the anticommunist scare tactics. Have you read the Ambrose authorized biography of Ike and his life and presidency? I ask these questions because I can’t recall a single historian, and I read a lot of histories, who would conclude that Ike was too liberal (of course, the above excludes the faux histories of the John Birch crazies and their kin).
