WASHINGTON -- Republicans antsy for a conservative standard-bearer in the presidential race have begun to rally behind Fred Thompson, propelling the former Tennessee senator to within hailing distance of the lead for the partys nomination, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg Poll has found.
Former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani holds first place in the survey, with support from 27 percent of the Republicans and independents who said they plan to vote in the partys 2008 primaries.
But Thompson, an actor who plays a prosecutor on NBCs Law and Order, runs just behind, with 21 percent. Indications are he will join the race within the next month.
The two other major GOP contenders, Sen. John McCain of Arizona and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, are in a battle for third place. McCain was backed by 12 percent of those polled, Romney by 10 percent. The rest of the field is mired in single digits.

PRIVATE REPLY TO MITT ROMNEY: It’s not going to happen for you in 2008. Maybe the Republican nominee will stumble and you can run for the Republican nomination in 2012.
If he just splits the McCain, Rommney, etc. vote, he is a shoe-in for the Republican nomination. The real issue - can he beat Hillary?
Look at Thompsons voting record and you’ll find a true conservative record not one of convenience like so many others running.
Fred is the man, a REAL conservative not a jive ass like Rudy or a flip flopper like Mitt.
Hillary’s worst nightmare, debating Fred Thompson. He can out-South her, out-polite her, out-humor her, and maybe even out her. Out her gracefully and with a “there’s nothing wrong with it” attitude, saying “Some of the finest actresses in the world are lesbians, I’d be glad to introduce you to them.” Zing.
Fred is a man who is unashamed of his conservative values and can express conservatism in a way that does not offend those in the middle. Fred has that special gift that conservatives need to succeed and it is exciting that the polls are reflecting that.
And that’s 21% without most people seeing him in political action or debate, where he tramples his opposition with a down-home (i.e. American) style.
Its too bad that this old lazy guy who has no fire in his belly, won’t be able to catch up in fund raising and entered the race too late is soundly kicking the others butt.
I have the impression that Thompson voted for McCain-Feingold . . .None of the top contenders is perfect.
NOBODY is perfect, candidate or not. Compared to the competition, however, Fred is head and shoulders above Rudy McRomney.

Actually, I think the dead man walking is McCain. Romney is still leading in fundraising and ahead in Iowa and New Hampshire, but McCain has nothing.
Oh, yeah. McCain dropping out is a forgone conclusion, as far as I’m concerned. He is spending money hand over fist and none is coming in.
McCain is toast.
“He can out-South her”
As if there’s any danger of the GOP losing the South to Hillary. IMHO, it’s a non-factor.
I wonder how much of Guiliani’s support is from states that will probably not vote (R) in the general election?
States like: MA, RI, NJ, NY, MD

McCain has earned it!
