Jackson city council woman Margaret Barrett-Simon was held up at gunpoint outside her Belhaven home. It happened just before 2:00 Saturday afternoon in the 1300 block of Hazel Street.
Barrett-Simon and her husband were just returning home when she noticed someone coming up her front walkway. He was holding a sawed-off shot gun and was headed straight for her.
"He had both hands on the shot gun the entire time," she said. "He and I never lost eye contact."
She said it took the armed robber by suprise when she met him at her front porch, introducing herself as a city official.
"I approached him and said, 'I'm council woman Barrett-Simon. Is there something I can do for you?' and he looked a little bit stunned. He said, 'I want your purse,' and I said 'of course,'" she recounted.
The robber is described as a black male with a dark complexion and bushy hair. He and a black male accomplice left in a dark-colored vehicle.
"I hate that this crime happened, but things like this are going to continue to happen," said Jackson Police Chief Shirlene Anderson. "There's a lot of things to take place in order for them not to."
This armed robbery comes a day after Mayor Frank Melton unveiled his new crime-fighting plan. It includes the Police Technical Operations Center where 60 video cameras placed throughout the city will be monitored. His plan also calls for more of a police presence on the streets and additional space to house criminals.
Barrett-Simon says something needs to change in order to halt the rise in robberies and violent crimes in the Capital City.
"We've got to do everything we can to stop the bad guys, and he is a bad guy," she said.
The council woman plans to call attention to Saturday's robbery at the next city council meeting.

Doing the jobs Americans won’t no longer do.
One of the proud consequences of taking jobs from the people in America and giving them to people who illegally come to America is what do the laid off workers do. No one seems to care about this ... but as the displaced go hungry, crime will skyrocket.
I don’t know if these people would work a real job, but there is a message coming that if ignored will explode. The French have this hammock society perfected, you can count success by adding up numbers of riots and burned cars.

Or spelling.
Did you ever meet anyone with a hyphenated name who didnt think their crap doesnt stink?
So let me get this right. She was held up by a sawed-off shotgun. They are very dangereous. I am sure glad the man aiding the shotgun in this crime didn’t do anything rash. Wonder what the shotgun’s share of the loot was?
I’m glad to see irony is not lost on us.
;^)
Sometimes when you add a word it comes out all wrong. Ain’t that the truth ... I will ‘try better’ next time.
Are you the grammar police — Do I now need to buy a grammar offset or something?
An exceptionally detailed description of the perp.
