President Bush is playing scorched earth. His enthusiasm is all or nothing. If he doesn’t value the people who have supported him most, I’ll miss him. But not for long.
Bush...on the Secure Fence Act 2006.........................
“Ours is a nation of immigrants. We’re also a nation of law. Unfortunately, the United States has not been in complete control of its borders for decades and, therefore, illegal immigration has been on the rise. We have a responsibility to address these challenges. We have a responsibility to enforce our laws. We have a responsibility to secure our borders. We take this responsibility seriously.
Earlier this year, I addressed the nation from the Oval Office. I laid out our strategy for immigration reform. Part of that strategy begins with securing the border. Since I took office we have more than doubled funding for border security — from $4.6 billion in 2001 to $10.4 billion this year. We’ve increased the number of Border Patrol agents from about 9,000 to more than 12,000, and by the end of 2008, we will have doubled the number of Border Patrol agents during my presidency”....GWB......
Sooo.... where’s the fence El Presidente?

This is flat out BS.... the bill doesn’t enforce diddly.... its the PEOPLE who enforce the LAWS
Last years immigration bill (electioneering?) Signed October 26, 2006 authorized 700 miles of border fence.
Just like we were told back in 1986?
Now that he's a lame duck, we have to hurry, hurry and ram this through?
After he did nothing for 6 years after 9/11/01?
No thank you! Go clear some brush!
‘Harder to enforce the border’-they have done nothing to enforce the border-absolutely nothing. How could it be harder. If this bill passed, the government would merely ignore enforcement as they have done for 30 years. At some point, the would demand another amnesty bill. If you refuse to enforce existing law, why should I believe you would enforce a new law?
“The Secure Fence Act builds on this progress. The bill authorizes the construction of hundreds of miles of additional fencing along our southern border. The bill authorizes more vehicle barriers, checkpoints and lighting to help prevent people from entering our country illegally.”

Why Mr. President, why? Why is enforcing the border (law) contingent on God knows what? (I call it BLACKMAIL)
Why is going after murderers, drunk drivers, tax evaders, speed limit breakers NOT contingent on some other legislation?
If your cabinet officers won't do their job: fire them.
If you can't do yours: resign.
Then forget about this bill.
>>Arent their laws NOW that enforce the border?
Unfortunately, laws don’t enforce anything, and don’t enforce themselves. Only the actions of the executive branch can enforce the laws that already exist on the books. GWB doesn’t want to enforce these laws because they are “too tough”, i.e. they treat illegal entrants as persona non grata. An illegal and the employer of an illegal are both guilty of perjury (a felony) if they knowingly misrepresent the information on the W-9 form, which must be completed and snt to the IRS at the initiation of employment. This bill changes all this, and GWB knows it.
Uh, no! You are not being asked by your constituents to do nothing. You’re being asked to enforce the existing laws.
Try that for nine months and then we’ll talk again.
"Let them eat cake Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, Morgellons disease, Typhoid, Measles,
Syphillis, Mumps, Leprosy, Dengue fever, Cholera, Plague, and Polio"
If our government EVER intended to enforce border and employment laws, they would have at least done so for 10 out of the last 20 years (since 1986 Simpson/Masoli bill that promised the same bull sh**.)
Yes, another Bush lie. We have laws. But the government is deliberately not enforcing them.
Dear Mr. President:
Although the Senates effort to reform our nations immigration laws through the Secure Borders, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Reform Act of 2007 is stalled, illegal immigration remains our nations number one domestic issue. We therefore believe it is incumbent upon us and our colleagues to tackle this issue and not leave this problem for future generations to solve.
As we travel around Georgia and continue to hear from our constituents, the message from a majority of Georgians is that they have no trust that the United States Government will enforce the laws contained in this new legislation and secure the border first. This lack of trust is rooted in the mistakes made in 1986 and the continued chaos surrounding our immigration laws. Understandably, the lack of credibility the federal government has on this issue gives merit to the skepticism of many about future immigration reform.
We believe the way to build greater support for immigration reform in the United States Senate and among the American public is to regain the trust in the ability of the federal government to responsibly administer immigration programs and enforce immigration laws. There is bipartisan agreement that we need to secure our borders first, and we believe this approach will serve as a platform towards addressing the other issues surrounding immigration reform.
To that end, we believe that you and your administration could alleviate many of the fears of our constituents by calling for an emergency supplemental bill to fully fund the border and interior security initiatives contained in legislation currently pending in the Senate, as well as any outstanding existing authorizations. Such a move would show your commitment to securing the border first and to stopping the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into our nation. It will also work towards restoring the credibility of the federal government on this critical issue.
We urge you to carefully consider this request, and thank you for the opportunity to express the views of the people of Georgia on this matter.
Sincerely,
Saxby Chambliss Johnny Isakson
United States Senator United States Senator
In the end this fight is not about what is good for America. It is what our Senators perceive to be in their best interest even if they have to screw America.
I want to see Bush push this again early next year.
It will smoke out the presidential candidates.
If we don’t enforce the laws now, what makes anyone think we will enforce the laws then?
