Jacoby of the Globe: Border Fence Like Berlin Wall
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 06/13/2007 3:42:55 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Is liberalism contagious?

For some years, Jeff Jacoby has been a brave and lonely conservative voice on the op-ed pages of the Boston Globe, one whose voice I have admired. All the more disappointing, then, to read his column this morning, The demonizing of illegal immigrants, could just have as easily been written by colleague Thomas Oliphant, the quintessential effete East Coast liberal. Consider these excerpts:

Illegal immigrants don't steal across the Mexican border because they lack the patience to wait their turn in line. They do it because there is no line for them to wait in. The great majority of immigrants who enter the United States lawfully qualify for visas because of family ties: They are lucky enough to be related to a US citizen . . . For most illegal immigrants, a legal option simply doesn't exist.

To . . . the Pat Buchanans, the Lou Dobbses, the conservative talk-show hosts and their riled listeners -- the illegal entry is all that matters. They don't ask whether it makes sense to bar industrious and productive go-getters who value America as a land of opportunity and who supply labor for which there is a yawning demand.

[S]omething is not wrong -- intrinsically wrong, bad in and of itself -- merely because it is illegal.

Someone who crosses the border without a visa in order to find work doesn't deserve to be branded a "criminal."

The demonizing of illegal aliens keeps us from having a rational discussion about US immigration policy.
Most shocking is Jacoby's final paragraph:
Twenty years ago this week in Berlin, President Reagan uttered his memorable challenge: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" Conservatives who extol Reagan's legacy might ask themselves what he would have thought of the idea that our response to hard-working risk-takers so eager for a piece of the American Dream that they endanger life and limb to come here should be a Berlin-style wall of our own.
As commentators from Rush to Rich Lowry have pointed out, the Berlin Wall was built to keep its people in -- to render them prisoners in their own country. The border fence is there to keep people out. And any country that doesn't control its borders will eventually cease to be a country.

It's disappointing that Jacoby doesn't acknowledge this. Has Jeff acquired some fuzzy liberal thinking via osmosis? Could it be time for him to take a Beantown break and recharge his conservative batteries elsewhere?

Mexican illegal aliens are the beneficiaries of way too much sympathy in the US.

Jacoby has lost his anchor, he has been swishy before so it is not that big a surprise! All politics is local, Liberalism is loco infectious in the NE, look at the Bushes, they can only hold back the infection for so long.

I’m very surprised to read that Jacoby wrote this.

The old addage applies:
Better to keep your mouth shut and have folks wondering if you are an idiot then to blather on and remove all doubt.

If illegal aliens don’t understand leechery intellectually, they understand it instinctively.

“Illegal immigrants don’t steal across the Mexican border because they lack the patience to wait their turn in line. They do it because there is no line for them to wait in.”

Bullshit. We have a legal means to emigrate to the US

“They don’t ask whether it makes sense to bar industrious and productive go-getters who value America as a land of opportunity and who supply labor for which there is a yawning demand.”

1/3rd of all prison inmates in CA are illegals. Illegals outside the prison system are for the most part “above the law”. bush defends those illegals on death row. Illegals just won a court case in Long Island...allowing them to congregate on street corners...

[S]omething is not wrong — intrinsically wrong, bad in and of itself — merely because it is illegal. “

Tax evasion, theft of services, false ID, Identity theft, nope, nuthin wrong with that folks...
Moron alert here.

“Someone who crosses the border without a visa in order to find work doesn’t deserve to be branded a “criminal.”

Again pinhead >>>> Tax evasion, theft of services, false ID, Identity theft.

“The demonizing of illegal aliens keeps us from having a rational discussion about US immigration policy.”

Since when is having 6000 unknowns meandering across our borders every week “rational”.

Drastic times call for drastic measures.

The Berlin wall analogy is simply so stupid it does not warrant a serious reply.

Throughout this latest “Immigration” ordeal bestowed upon us by the Left of Center idealogues within our Government class, I’ve noted all to many “Right Thinking” lose focus of the word “Illegal” that precedes the word “Immigrant”.

Must remain focused on reality of the fact that “Illegal Immigration” has been allowed (seemingly purposefully) to become “Illegal Invasion”.

Perhaps Mr. Jacoby suffers of this loss of focus.

There´s nothing wrong with a good wall/fence if it´s meant to keep people OUT. If it´s supposed to keep free people IN, we have a problem. So, I´m annoyed by all these folks telling you that the Mexican border fence or the Israeli wall are like the Berlin wall. It´s just no valid comparison.

Jacoby and his running dog lackeys lack the brainpower to differentiate between in, out, over, under ~ the basic stuff.

I cant understand where all these intellectuals get the Idea that we all decided that the country should be turned over to tens of millions of mexicans . Who decided that mexicans can come to America free of charge and everything gets printed in spanish and spoken in spanish and all others need not apply. Where are the English, the French Russians , Italians ,Polish . This is insanity.

Has Jacoby lost his f***ing mind...??!! Mexicans have been the BIGGEST beneficiaries of family reunification. Hey Jeff, ever heard of the term, "anchor baby"...?? Thanks do the ridiculous interpretation of the 14th Amendment, an illegal simply has to cross the border, pop out a kid, and **presto**, she's the proud parent of a new U.S. citizen! Then she and the did can start filling out paperwork for the rest of this new U.S. citizen's relatives to come and join them!

Then there was the glorious 1986 Amnesty that allowed nearly 3 million illegals to sponsor all of their relatives to come on over as well! Hey Jeff, you feel sorry for the poor Mexicans that have to cross the Rio Grande...? Try swimming across the $!#@&*! Atlantic sometime!

Of course, because of all these illegals that have been been able to stay, thanks to anchor babies and several different amnesties ( there have been seven since the one in '86 ) there have been fewer legal immigrants that have been able to get through because they are continually being "squeezed out" by more and more relatives of people who initially broke the law. But Jeff isn't crying for immigrants who are effectively being "punished" by patiently waiting their place in line.... he's all broken up over the poor illegals.

The sheer irony of this travesty is completely lost on you Jeff.

Its kind of hard to set a limit and allow a certain number of immigrants when thousands of illegal ones are scampering across every day. Lets call the line jumpers.

Now jump the line at Disney and get caught and they will throw you out of the park.

Comparing the Berlin wall to a border fence is like comparing prison bars to burglar bars on a home... and the elite propagandists know it.

They do it because there is no line for them to wait in.

A big, fat lie. These people think they can win an argument by telling lies.

Tell that to the huge number of legal aliens and naturalized citizens who have played by the rules AND STILL ARE PLAYING BY THE RULES.

They have worked hard for years following the legal process.

The pro-illegals crowd just keeps arguing that these trespassers should butt in line because they are to be pitied.

What these border-jumping criminals are doing is making a mockery out of those who ARE waiting patiently for their legal processes to be completed. They are also making a mockery out of the rule of law itself.

Of course poor people want to come to the U.S. They want to get here from every corner of the Earth!
