I grew up in South Jersey and left about 18 years ago. I go back about twice a year to visit relatives. Two days is all I can stand then I have to get the hell out! When I go to WaWa for my morning coffee it’s a cluster F#$@!. The cashier is handing me my change and the person behind me is pushing me out of the way. Go,go go!!!! I do miss the Pine Barrens and the good food. Here in the Pittsburgh area these sub shops can’t make a good hoagie to save their ass!

In all honesty, the worst thing about the Pine Barrens are the mosquitoes in the summer. And yes, as shown in the Sopranos, it is easy to get lost without a compass, but that is true in any forest. Its actually a pleasent place to go canoeing, fishing or hunting. Don't want to be there during a drought (brush fires) or when Chris and Paulie are running around looking for Russians.
BTW: Us amateur students of film know that many of the shots in the "Pine Barrens" episode were taken directly from the conclusion of Bertollucci's "The Conformist", a film which is NOT OUT ON DVD, along with the rest of Bernardo's 70s output (the good stuff).

I love Texas (at least the parts I have been to), but don’t care for Houston, apart from the Gentleman’s Clubs (and I am past that stage in my life now).

I remember when Camden was actually a nice place. Had relatives there in the 1960’s and the row homes were big and functional. I have found memories of family Christmas gatherings there. In the late 60’s it started going down hill fast. Now it looks like Mogadishu.

Just stay south of Seaside Heights... Actually, Spring Lake, Bay Head, and Mantolocking are more peaceful than anyplace south of Sleazeside. Point Pleasent is nice if you have a family, but it can be a total zoo during the summer.
Besides, south of Seaside you still have Wildwood, which was rather scuzzy last time I was there (15 years ago).

Camden, NJ and Chester, PA downriver are two of the four scariest towns in America. The other two are Detroit and Opa Locka, FL.

I looked at it. I wasn’t sure if you made a typo or you were making a joke.
I’m well known for typos, so I erred on the side of typo.

You are quite right. I loved growing up in South Jersey. Lots of big money came in with the casinos and then more after 911. I took my two daughters back and searched for the Jersey that I grew up in only to discover that it has been bulldozed, paved, restricted and strip malled/mauled.
*Sigh*

And yes, as shown in the Sopranos, it is easy to get lost without a compass Funny thing, when I saw the Pine Barrens episode I'm thinking to myself, "Uh, that's not the pine barrens", it looked very much like my area of the state. So I looked it up online and I was right, well sorta. It was filmed in Harriman State Park NY which is part of the same general "mountain" range my house is in and about 10-12 miles away via crow flies.
