THE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE: DeVore holds out for Thompson
Daily Pilot ^ | June 13, 2007 | Alicia Robinson

A number of 2008 presidential hopefuls have come looking for support in Orange County, but they're not going to get it from Newport Beach Republican Assemblyman Chuck DeVore. Last week he gave his endorsement to a man who isn't even officially running: former Tennessee senator and widely-known actor Fred Thompson.

Thompson, a Republican, headlined the Orange County Lincoln Club's annual dinner in May, where he got warm applause but didn't announce his candidacy. Now DeVore is urging Thompson to run and believes he is the first partisan elected official in California to endorse the actor-turned-politician.

What won DeVore over, he said, was Thompson's ability to communicate — an area where most people agree President Bush is lacking.

"I think that Fred Thompson has the best combination of the tremendous talent to connect firmly with the American people … combined with a mainstream conservative philosophy that I think the American people will resonate to," DeVore said.

"...Thompson's ability to communicate "

You know...that kind of thinking just sad.
However, I know that it's important to be able to communicate.

Thank goodness that Fred has so many good thoughts, AND is a good communicator.

Plus, he has a trophy wife.
Didja know that? ;o)

Thompson, a Republican, headlined the Orange County Lincoln Club's annual dinner in May, where he got warm applause but didn't announce his candidacy.

That was the speech some of the Romney and Rudy backers who attended tried to put the news out that Fred flopped.

And Bush just beats that point home. Discounting a couple things Bush did (Prescription Drugs, Immigration Reform, CFR) Bush's policies have been pretty darn good. Bush's failure to lead was purely his inability to communicate his vision and articulate his policies in a positive manner.

Agreed. If Bush had Reagan's (or even Thompson's) ability to communicate directly to the American people, we would have gotten permanent tax cuts, social security reform, and none of this cut-and-run garbage from anyone serious.

Exactly what I was thinking when I read the article -- not bad for a guy who gave a lousy speech, huh? ;)

I don’t know where the story went. It WAS at that link, but appears to have been removed.

Maybe someone’s a plagiarist. :)
