Putting aside the stupidity of passing such a law, serious unintended consequences will occur from enacting this bill. Assemby Bill 3511: 1) Makes 12 handguns the maximum number of handguns any retail dealer can acquire in a year, from any combination of private owners, manufacturers or wholesalers. 2) Turns unsuspecting law abiding citizens into criminals who buy more than one gun a month from two different sellers. 3) Fails to exempt members of the U.S. Armed Forces, the National Guard, bank guards, nuclear power plant guards, security guards and movie and theater production companies. 4) Protects illegal gun traffickers in New Jersey by rendering useless the federal multiple handgun sales reporting program.

I wonder why he’s so sure those consequences are “unintended”.
One unintended consequence will be my moving from the state of NJ as soon as I can. This state sucks.
Ditto !!
Damn, you registered with FR one day before me !!
We have sane firearms laws here in NH: must-issue, open and concealed carry; inexpensive ammo available at any Wal-Mart. Many job openings and fewer moonbats, too.
Are you sure about that? Didn’t NH vote blue in the Kerry column?
We need more conservatives in NH, and FAST!! The libs are trying to take over.
The winters aren’t really that cold (grin....).
The vote was close in '04, but Kerry did win. We also had both houses of our state legislature go Democrat last year, largely due to voter anger over the Iraq war. But we're still a conservative state by New England standards, and yes, our gun laws are very favorable. I have purchased handguns here and all that is required is (minimal) paperwork and a phone call and you're good to go. I've also got a CCW permit and practice at a local range where you can easily rent anything from a .22 popgun to a Bushmaster A-4.
Isn’t this an oxymoron? How can any firearms law be sane? : )
Passed in the house. Some beatch up North brought it up. Her reason for writing the bill was “ Why does anyone need more than one handgun a month ? “
Only applies to handguns . I imagine inheritance would be included . Move to SC. The only law they have is Federal Check and you buy .
Thanks...handguns are a heathy part of the collection. Oh well...he’s talking about moving as well, might as well look for two homes.
To me, this seems to fit my description of the “worst possible laws” being based on one thing: that their sole real purpose is to “make things easier” for bureaucrats.
That is, it is an axiom that a primary reason for creating a law is that it will “make things easier” for government employees, that law is *guaranteed* to be a stinker.
Not just as it relates to gun control, either. For example, surveillance and traffic cameras used to enforce laws, instead of having policemen on duty. Truly a bad idea.
Public identity cards with lots of biometric information on them, correlated to complex databases and bulky dossiers on citizens, instead of having trained security personnel. Truly a bad idea.
On the surface they look and are abusive, but in truth the government often wants them less to be authoritarian, than to “make their job easier”. That is, because of laziness and inefficiency.
It is a hallmark of authoritarian governments that they tend to *ignore* the important things that government is *supposed* to do, in favor of obsessively policing things of little importance. They do not care about war and peace, or crime and violence. But they care intensely about when people eat their lunch, and what brand of toilet paper they use.
With wisdom, a good government can handle the big things; but a bad government prefers to involve itself in minutia. It just seems easier. But in truth, they are too lazy and incompetent to manage the minutia either. So they are always on the look out for the “deux ex machina” that will do their work for them.
And that means passing really dumb laws.
Case in point, this gun control law was “sold” on the idea of limiting gun purchases. But in truth, the real reason is that the bureaucrats in charge of monitoring gun sales want less work, which they will only get if fewer guns get sold.
Guns aren’t their problem. Lazy and inefficient government is their problem.
How about the law that prevents insane people from buying a gun, or prevents a dealer selling a gun to an intoxicated person? Or one requiring a young person to pass a hunting and firearms safety class - usually taught by the NRA - before they can obtain a hunting license?
Do you honestly feel that all gun laws are insane, or are you just a little keyed-up this morning?
Fair Tax would certainly “make things easier” for government employees at the IRS (sit home collecting unemployment) yet would not be a bad thing at all.
>My dad has a lot of family owned firearms that will have to be dealt with at some point in time....Anyone have any ideas?<
The best option is to move to a state that isn’t afaraid to have citizens owning handguns and keep them. Next best would be to give them to a family member who lives in one of those states. Third is to put them in storage with a trusted friend in one of those states.
One thing to keep in mind is that their is a limit to how many firearms you can sell each year in private sales before you need a FFL. I think it is six but I am not sure.
if you’re insane, why are you allowed to walk free?
please cite law restricting sales to intoxicated persons. usually its common sense due to liability.
why do i need a “class”? my dad taught me better than any class.
