It is encouraging to see an awareness on the part of the administration that FR is a cauldron of opinion that, while it is entirely dependent on the MSM for source material, is equally independent of those media for the result. I'd be concerned about it being a conduit from the White House directly to us if it weren't for the fact that it is already a conduit for the unfiltered spewings of the NY Times and CNN.

It is, IMHO, evident that many inside the Beltway in both parties were taken somewhat by surprise at the strength of the response to what was clearly regarded inside the Beltway as an entirely acceptable piece of legislation. The initial response was that the merits of that legislation were insufficiently communicated. It may be that the drawbacks were insufficiently communicated back the other direction, or perhaps misinterpreted by professionals whose business is it to interpret it. What may be done now to ameliorate the communications issues must take into account a level of mistrust that has resulted from this disconnect.

The level of mistrust is very real as may be seen on any immigration thread or practically any other thread that has been hijacked by well-meaning FReepers for whom this issue has become something of an idée fixe. The level of passion present is a direct result of the conviction that their representatives aren't listening to them and have no intention of doing so, and regard the problem as that they aren't listening to their representatives. That is a very dangerous situation for anyone who depends on re-election for a job.

Correct. The Trust Bank Accout is ZERO.

Bush’s numbers show that less than half of Republicans
approve, and amazingly low number, given that many people
have simply stopped calling themselves Republican over this issue . ..
“Among all Americans, just 29 percent now approve of his handling of immigration, a career low.”

And they propose a “POS” bill that anyone can tell up front will be a failure at stopping further illegal immigration, because it is designed not to help us but to help solve the ‘problems’ the cheap labor lobby and illegal immigrants have.

And they try to pass it with this secretive closed-door stunt. ...
“Fifth, the Achilles heel of the Axis of Amnesty’s putsch was that the bill had to be posted on the Internet.

The legislation was written in secret. Committee hearings on it were blocked. It was far too long for many busy Senators and their staffers to read.”

The “Kennedy-Bush Axis of Amnesty” is destroying the GOP.
