Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- President Bush is defending his pro-life record on abortion, abstinence and other issues in two key speeches this week. He touted his record on Wednesday at a speech before leaders of the Southern Baptist Church and will appear in a video presentation at the annual National Right to Life convention later this week.
Bush told the Baptists that he understood the of fair-minded and impartial judges to our democracy and received significant applause from those in attendance when he mentioned his nominations of John Roberts and Sam Alito to the Supreme Court.
The two justices recently joined with three other members of the high court in upholding the ban on partial-birth abortions.
Bush touted his signing of that law as well as the Born Alive Infants Protection Act, and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, which protects pregnant women and their unborn children from acts of violence.
The president also talked about the actions hes taken to protect American taxpayers from funding abortion or embryonic stem cell research.
I've refused to fund programs overseas that promote or perform abortions, he said. I used my first veto on a bill that would have compelled American taxpayers to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos. And I will veto any bill Congress sends me that violates the sanctity of human life.
Bush told the Baptists that they have done considerable work to not only help pass pro-life laws that save lives but to advance the cause in other practical ways such as promoting adoption or helping pregnant women.
believe building a culture of life in our country also means promoting adoption and teaching teen abstinence, funding crisis pregnancy programs, and supporting the work of faith-based groups, he said.
In defending the lives of the weakest and the most vulnerable members of our society we reflect the compassion and humanity of America. And we will continue to work toward the day when every child is welcomed in life and protected in law, he said.
The president said that the commitment of the Southern Baptist Church in working to promote a culture of life abroad by helping lead the fight against malaria and HIV/AIDS has been paying dividends. The programs are abstinence based rather than focused on promoting contraception.
In Uganda, Southern Baptists sponsor an abstinence program called True Love Waits, the president said. And thanks to efforts like yours, Uganda has made progress against HIV/AIDS.
The SBC is currently working to fund the program in six more African nations.
Thank you, Mr. President. You have your flaws, but on this subject, you have been stalwart.
I hope they make some hey of all the abstinance funding being zeroed out in the Abortion PArty’s proposed budgets.
The President hopefully will have some congressional allies in that effort. But the GOP’s spine has been largely missing for some time.
Why is it that Freepers feel compelled to add a qualifier to every compliment they offer President Bush?! . . . I notice that the reverse is not true.
THANK YOU President Bush for walking your pro-life talk! .
Mr. Bush-— PUT UP THAT WALL!!!!!
I agree...let’s not forget all the good he’s done. Thank you, Mr. President, for supporting life.
Hey Dutchy go find an immigration thread . . . BTW: It’s PRESIDENT BUSH!
I second that. :)
Because most of his recent actions have been a disappointment to conservatives. It’s quite simple, really.
==> “Thank you, Mr. President. You have your flaws, but on this subject, you have been stalwart.” <==
Credit, where credit is due. Bash, where bashing is called for and we have seen far too much of that lately.
I have been and still am one of President Bush’s staunchest defenders here at FR, for many reasons. Just in case your comment was directed at me.
“Because most of his recent actions have been a disappointment to conservatives. Its quite simple, really.”

President Bush has not been a “disappointment” to me because I actually listened to his campaign speeches (including those given during his Texas campaigns) and knew EXACTLY what he believed/s vis a vis ALL relevant issues!
THE ANCHORESS ARTICULATES MY THOUGHTS PRECISELY:
“For a while now, and really, since shortly after the 2004 election, I have gotten emails from folks who say, Bush forgot that you have to dance with the one that brung you. Theyve been sending me that message for so long, on so many different issues, that I suspect Bush feels a little like a girl who is invited to a fancy ball - and proves to be excellent company for most of the night, despite being hated by many of the guests but manages to fall out of step, at which point she is abandoned on the dance floor and told to find her own way home.

—Has he kept you safe since 9/11? So safe that youve almost forgotten to fear? Yes.
—Did he remove the wall between the CIA and the FBI? Yes.

yes!

Has he really been your Judas? Has he really betrayed you?
Did he ever question your patriotism, or tell you you were a bad person? No, actually, he didnt. Go read his remarks in context, instead of looking at one sentence blared at you by the very media you distrust. Be intellectually honest enough to admit that in this immigration controversy there are (sadly) some who are using fear to move their agenda, and there are some (only some, but they hurt us all) who reveal bigotry in their rants. You neednt be offended if you can remember that there are those somes in every group; conservatives have no corner of perfection. You actually do have a choice as to how you receive what you hear, see and read, just as you have a choice as to how you receive a good, that is, with open or closed heart.

I know you’re one of the President’s staunchest supporters at FR and I thank you!
My point about ‘qualifiers’ stands: If Freepers must include a blanket criticism with every compliment, then they should also include a blanket compliment with every criticism OR just dispense with the qualifiers entirely — it’s the English prof in me!
. . . just thought you might enjoy reading my post at #13!
Just so we remember that the President is our friend on some things, even though he is our adversary on a few others.
President Bush also supports killing the entire U.S. as a country and taking all of the Republican Party and taking all of conservatism with it-all thanks to “Shamnesty” legislation!
If he would simply resolve to enforce the borders and enforce the laws, he would have our support in all things. But currently the President has chosen to go down a path that will be destructive not only to us, but to our posterity and it is a one way path.
We must resolve to stop him in his tracks. Three cheers for Bush on the pro-life front. But the dogs of war have been released on the immigration front. Our battle is there. We can actually do something about that in the next few weeks. We can refocus our attention on this front after we have pushed back the enemy on the other front. Unfortunately the enemy on that front is our friend on this front.
Frankly what we are trying to do here is to save President Bush's legacy. He seems hell bent on destroying it.
. . . our friend on MANY things — I refer you to my post at #13!
To paraphrase Golda Meir, politicians don’t have friends, they have allies.
I am the president’s ally on many things. You are correct that he deserves our support for the many correct things he has done.
However, one shouldn’t allow bad policies just because a politician has given good policies in the past.
The amnesty legislation is an abomination, and it should be rejected.
