This week, Congress sent President Bush a bill easing restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, but so far Bush isn't in a big rush to veto the bill as promised.
Bush did say the bill "puts scientific research and ethical principle into conflict" rather than providing "a balanced approach that advances scientific and medical frontiers without violating moral principles."
Stem cell research is among the president's least favorite issues. It's too fraught and ambiguous and lacks the clear political and moral distinctions that he prefers.
As with the clean air issue, Bush is hoping technology and private research will save the day on stem cells, and the White House routinely trumpets new advances in stem cell science.
Last year, Bush vetoed a similar bill that would have eased funding restrictions and allowed patients at fertility clinics to donate unused frozen embryos for potentially life-saving research.
Complaining this month that Congress had "recycled an old bill," Bush said he would also recycle his 2006 veto. A spokesman on Thursday could not say when that would happen.
Veto may be overridden This time, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada believes he is in range of enough votes to override Bush's veto. The bill passed the Senate in April by a vote of 63-34. Three Democrats missed the vote.
"We are within one senator of having a veto that's overridden, if the president decides to veto this again, which I think would be a real shame," Reid said.

Well, maybe Bush will get around to the veto when he gets amnesty bill signed (kill it).
pocket veto?
So, we take notes. I won’t vote for anyone who votes for this bill. I’ll write my own name in first, if I have to.
Isn’t that the kind of veto that has to have Congress out of session for thirty days?
Can’t remember high school civics.
I’m in the same camp ... I will write my name in before supporting with my vote ANYONE who doesn’t comprehend the value of human beings. But you better watch out, some will take that as a cue to write you in also! If you got elected, then what would you do, you’d have to serve because you’re honorable.
No telling what kind of promises are being made in order to get votes.
Wow , I almost think that Bush would not veto it this time just to get his precious amnesty. I truly think amnesty means that much to him ....
Article I. Section 7.
...If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten Days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law, in like Manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment prevent its Return, in which Case it shall not be a Law.
Bush Jr lost his chance for the high road when he did nothing for our border guards that were sent to prison because they did their job. He is the continuance of this problem and it equates to an embezzler being in charge of payroll because he has another idea. His and the Congress ideas have gotten this country in this mess and they have lost the right to fix their problem. THE ONLY THING I AGREE TO IS FIX THE FENCE and stop illegal immigration. We will not talk about legalization until this is COMPLETE. period, end of sentence.
And so do I. I almost believe that he would pull the troops out of Iraq if it meant passing the amnesty bill.
In my mind, that dirty rat traitor in the White House has sunk to the level of "our" Jimmy Carter.
Don’t insult Jimmy Carter, He wasn’t the best but what is in there now is beyond worst.
