Let me guess, the data was not encrypted, despite this sort of thing happening dozens of times in the past (and making national news).

Here’s the latest from WBNS:

“COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. Ted Strickland announced on Friday morning that a storage device with all state employee data, including names and Social Security numbers, has been stolen. The theft occurred last Sunday when someone broke into a vehicle and made off with the device, Strickland said. The car was parked at an apartment complex. Strickland said state officials were in the process of notifying all state employees, as well as offices across Ohio. He said information on the device could not be easily accessed, and said there was no reason to believe there had been a breach. The State Highway Patrol is currently investigating the theft, Strickland said. Strickland advised employees to utilize identity theft protection services for up to one year. During the announcement, the Governor said a call line will be open for employees with questions or concerns. The lines will be open Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and next week 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.”

The personal information of every state employee has been stolen but there’s no reason to believe that there’s been a breach??? Jeesh!

>>My question is why does someone NEED to have this data in their car?<<

And it’s a sure bet that the state employee who left the data in the car will not be fired.

These thefts cannot be a coincidence.

"Oh gosh, I just happened to lose my laptop that contained the SSNs of every veteran in America. Tee hee. Sorry!"

I've seen almost identical stories about nine times on FR.

I wonder if this is related to the identity issue with the aliens at Del Monte?

My bet is this “storage device” was one of those little USB flash drives.

I have one that can hold 16GB of data. Which is a lot of social security numbers :-)

This could never happen in my state of Mississippi. A "storage device" for critical data here is one of those huge, gray, desktop-size hardcover binders that weighs about 40 lbs. The kind you see in old movies.

: )

I can't wait until Sunday when the Columbus Dispatch again writes about the wonderful job our new Democrat Governor, Ted Strickland, is doing.

>>I amwaiting for the Gov. to find a way to blame Taft!!<<

Taft was such an incompetent boob that I’d probably believe it.

In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that it was Taft who left the database in his car. :-)

That quote caught my eye too. Simply un-freakin-beleivable...was that quote from Strickland himself?

If so, that man is too stupid to sustain breathing, much less be the Ohio guv.
