Senate Immigration Update – June 15, 2007 (Senate Insider Call to Arms)

A top inside Hill source e-mailed me a call to arms from inside the Beltway bunker. Read it and act, if you still care:

Senate Immigration Update – June 15, 2007

All indication is that Harry Reid has chosen to resume consideration of immigration sometime next week, possibly as early as Wednesday. It is his folly – a curious political choice designed to avoid the "do-nothing" label he so richly deserves.

But as much as he should be blamed personally for choosing to bring the bill back, it is the Republican leadership and Republican "grand bargainers" who are deserving of America's contempt. Grand bargainers Graham, Kyl, Martinez and McCain made their deal with the devil a long time ago. And now, after a week of deal-making and arm-twisting, Senator Lott and McConnell have joined forces with them and with Democrats to pull together the 60 votes needed to pass an immigration bill that not only has no chance of working, but undermines our nation's rule of law, damages our national security and will cost billions of dollars.

They do so knowingly and firmly over the objections of the American people. They have done so with great contempt for those who dare to question the decision or put up a fight. It is now up to the American people to demonstrate at a level never seen before in American politics that this is an unacceptable breach of faith with them and will not be tolerated. It is the only hope at this point that this terrible legislation – that has no chance of working – does not become law.

Up to now, a handful of Senators have been able to fight for amendments – and more, to fight for the transparency necessary to expose this bill's fatal flaws. Senators Sessions and DeMint properly objected to a sham amendment process that was limiting the rights of Republicans. Other members offered amendment after amendment designed to target the bill's many weaknesses - but few were granted votes. Their efforts and of those other members who didn't just "accept the grand bargain" have exposed the bill to the American people.

But now, those members are not the hope. They are going to be limited in their ability to do anything to stop this bill. In short – the very Senate leadership who repeatedly asks that the Republican caucus stick together are now rolling their conservative members to do a deal with Democrats – to do a deal with Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid and Hillary Clinton.

The hope now lies with the American people. The American people have been speaking – and Senators are beginning to listen. Don't give up now. It is clear that Senators are beginning to understand that this bill is not supported by a sizable and important segment of the American public – middle America. There are many Senators still on the fence that are being counted on to pass this bill. This is why today it is up to the people. If there is any hope – the American people must speak, and must speak loudly. Make phone calls to Senate offices, repeatedly, and non stop until the bill is defeated. Faxes and email – flood their offices. Fax in voided checks to the NRSC and the RNC with letters saying you won't support them – and if you have ever given money before, ask for it back. Make very clear that this is the ultimate breach of faith and that there will be consequences.

Spread the word, America – there are a handful of Republican Senators who can stop this – and it is up to you to hold them accountable. It is up to you to tell them that you refuse to take this – you refuse to be sold a bill of goods. You are on to them – you know the bill cannot work. You know that this bill is "not better than the status quo" as the powers-that-be would have you believe. You know that this bill will cost YOU billions of dollars. You know that this bill harms our national security and undermines the rule of law. You know.

If you speak, they will listen. Go.

if you have ever given money before, ask for it back.

Interesting suggestion. Does anyone know if this is doable? Can you ask for donated money back? That suggestion alone would do some damage - big time.

Unfortunately, my two Ohio Senators are liberal airheads, Georgie Girl Voinovich and pot head Sherrod Brown.

Its a waste of time calling either office.

What about calling the NRC or the NRSC. I know I called my local GA GOP and expressed my displeasure. I never thought about asking for donations back.

e-mail Ensign and McConnell- tell them, no money for any of you who stand for this- also promise to organize against any supporter of this plan. A few hundred Freepers on the phones in SC could make an interesting primary, and that is a valuable contribution which can be given over and over again; in Kansa, Texas, Arizona and Kentucky, for example.

This is a priceless quote by Duncan Hunter, my choice for POTUS, The idea that we will have border security only if it’s paid for by illegal immigrants is unacceptable,” Mr. Hunter said. This is Jorges plan.. plain and simple... keep the calls going..

‘What about calling the NRC or the NRSC. I know I called my local GA GOP and expressed my displeasure. I never thought about asking for donations back.’

I got a questionaire from Boehner a couple of weeks ago, registered my disappointment in each catagory they offered up, then in the comments section noted ‘No donations til you secure the border, and kill the Amnesty bill’.

My position hasn’t changed, nor will my plans for future cash donations.

Hmmmm. Maybe Mitch will listen, but given his wifes publicly stated views....I kinda doubt it.

phone calls are not working... we must march and be seen in order to be heard... we’ve got to leave our homes and our computers and go out there with signs and banners and our voices... anything short of this will continue to fall flat...

Don't give up. My two senators are DiFi and Boxer(CA) both die hard liberals. The voters convinced Boxer to vote no on cloture and she did, twice. She is still standing firm. This was a huge surprise. It was the voters that convinced her. Even a liberal will cave if they believe they are going to lose elections over this terrible bill, keep callling and putting on the pressure, saying it is a waste of time is defeatist. If nothing else call the RNC and the republican leadership and tell them you will switch parties over this bill and they will never get another dime from you if it passes. This has a tremendous effect on them. Phone # (toll free courtesy of illegal supporters)800-417-7666. Call you senators, don't play dead.

Call them anyway! If they don't hear from people that they are angry about this travesty, then they will think everyone approves of what these traitors are doing.

Not that it changes the way I think about this POS immigration bill but Reid must be chortling over all the sturm & drang this issue generates within the Republican party. This is truly a win-win situation for the Democrats. If the POS bill passes the Dems will have done the work of their masters. Should it go down to defeat Reid and the others will beat the Reblicans like a drum with it. The longer they can bleed the Republicans the better.

I don't care any more about the Republican party. I didn't leave it, it left me.

Idea? Could we begin to petition drives in our states to have the governor/legislator recall these senators that are for this bill? certain states don’t have too much of a problem, but this could “help” others to stand their ground against this bill and Help even more to see the light and join those against it.

if anything, if this gained momentum it could scare the He.. out of em

I have been calling Brownback’s office as well as my two Texas senators and telling them what I think of this, and that I will never again give money to or vote for any senator who supports this bad bill.

I just got this canned response from Arlen Spectacle's office in response to a fax I sent yesterday, which is pretty fast for him:

Dear (VR):

Thank you for contacting my office regarding immigration. Our immigration system is broken and must be reformed. As the Ranking Member on the Senate Judiciary Committee in the 110 th Congress, I have worked tirelessly with my fellow Senators and both the Secretary of Commerce and the Secretary of Homeland Security to develop a "grand compromise" on the subject of comprehensive immigration reform. This compromise will ensure that our borders are secure while providing practical solutions regarding the millions of undocumented immigrants that already reside within the United States .

This legislation makes border security a top priority by providing for 18,000 border patrol agents and requiring 370 miles of new fencing along the border. It will also provide for the resources to detain up to 27,500 aliens per day on an annual basis, effectively ending the old "catch and release" program. Importantly, this bill requires that all of these "triggers" designed to secure our borders be implemented before we begin any other step in this comprehensive legislation. The legislation also mandates the development of an effective electronic employment verification system, which will ensure that employers are able to verify the legal status of those they consider hiring.

In addition to the strong approach this bill will take towards border security, it also includes a firm but reasonable approach towards those individuals who are here illegally. Currently, there are more than 12 million people living in the United States without proper documentation. This legislation requires undocumented immigrants to go on "probationary" status and to go through extensive background checks. Once an individual has passed the necessary security checks, paid substantial fines and demonstrated proficiency in English, the individual may "earn" a right to remain in the United States . In order for an individual to be eligible to earn the right, the individual must return to their home country and apply through a consulate or an embassy. By requiring immigrants to earn their right to permanent legal status, this bill provides a reasonable solution to the country's immigration problems that is both tough and fair.

It is also very important for our economy that we create an effective temporary worker program that allows an employer to find a temporary worker when no willing US worker can be found. Those desiring temporary employment in the United States would be issued a "Y" visa, which would be good for two years. The migrant worker would be required to return to his or her home country for a period of one year before they are allowed to return back to the United States .

Another important aspect of this bill is the creation of a merit based system for allocating green cards. This new system will focus on attracting the immigrants who will make the biggest contribution to our society. The system is designed to reward those who demonstrate a proficiency in English, have received higher forms of education and other training, and have employment opportunities in the United States . Not only will this practice strengthen the economy of the United States , but it will also end the practice of "chain migration," a practice that allows people to immigrate simply by virtue of being related to those who are already here legally.

Again, I thank you for contacting my office. Although the bill has suffered recent setbacks, I am pleased that leaders on both sides of the aisle are determined to produce a viable immigration bill. I believe we will return to this matter shortly and produce a comprehensive bill. I will keep in mind your input as we continue to debate immigration. If you have any additional questions on this or any other issue, please do not hesitate to contact my office or visit my website at www.specter.senate.gov .

Sincerely,

Arlen Specter

(sigh!)
