Bush urges Hispanics to push immigration bill Despite its revival in the Senate, legislation's fate is uncertain.
WASHINGTON — President Bush urged Hispanics to lobby hard for a major immigration bill Friday, a day after it was revived in the Senate.
"Each day our nation fails to act, the problem only grows worse," Bush said at the annual National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast. "I will continue to work closely with members of both parties to get past our differences and pass a bill I can sign this year."
Bush's comments came after Senate leaders announced a deal Thursday that would allow the legislation to come back to the Senate floor as early as next week.
But the fate of the measure is uncertain.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Friday that he "insisted on a process to prevent endless debate and get the bill through the Senate."
He said he hoped Republicans would not "stall" the legislation.

How low can a man go?
Regards
Our government has failed to act Bushie—WHERE’S THE FENCE!
God bless our President. He will lead our cause to victory.
What the heck are you talking about?
The Unites States of America is about to be lost.
How do we threaten in NY state when we are cursed with Shcumer and Clin-toon.......
luckily, I'll be dead in 25 years and I won't see or care.
No willingness to fight and a desire to give in........
If General Patton was alive, he would slap many faces!!
Unlike the anti-immigration extremists, the President realizes that our only hope is to win over Hispanic voters.
The United States of America is about to become a much better place thanks to the foresight of President Bush.
And our President has completely lost his mind. The future better not be the illegal-Hispanic-invasion model or our country and all the value it has so far given the world is really lost. Just how useful has Mexico been to helping the rest of the world?
We can only hope and campaign for someone that really understands the seriousness of the problem.
President Bush urged Hispanics to lobby hard for a major immigration bill
Hope ‘Hispanics’ are smart enough not to buy into that. No ‘guest worker’ is going back to Mexico, they’ve brought families, and plan to stay.
SPOT THE DIFFERENCE;
“annual National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast”
annual National Prayer Breakfast
Hold on pal......Mexicans are for this but not all Hispanics are Mex.....Cubans are not in favor of this cuz they will lose the political status they now have. PRs are aginst this too.
Mex is looked down upon by a majority of Hispanics.
He is turning to his base it seems.
I don’t know anyone here FRiend who is anti-immigration - on the other hand I know many who are anti-illegal immigration.
the anti-immigration extremists
If they want illegal immigration to remain illegal, I agree.
What’s extreme is making illegal immigration, legal.
Fixed!
I voted for George W too, but you are aware of a new Presidential race kinda coming soon?
I am for Giuliani, but Fred will do.
The main thrust is to deny the *unt hill clin-toon.
“Each day our nation fails to act, the problem only grows worse,” Bush said at the annual National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast.
I agree. Let’s not fail to act anymore. Impeach Bush immediately.
President Bush urged Foreign Nationals
Fixed Again!
Exactly, Al Qedah, spies from China and Russia, and many others
who can’t vote here but supported Democrats in the last election want their ‘guest worker’ rights too.
How about Bush listening to Americans?
Why does the WH choose to ignore the obvious? Enforce the laws that are already on the books, and secure the borders. That can't be that difficult.
If Conservatives are routinely chastised by Jorge as being bigot, racists and such....if the immigration “problem” is not supposed to be race or ethnically based.....then why would Jorge be hispandering?
....looks like you’re a recent immigrant here on FR.
Can you back up your assertions with any facts?
If the dems start impeaching him, I’ll support them.
You’re wasting your time and energy standing up for President Bush with this mob. Best go into lurk mode...and make some popcorn.
I wish I knew, but there is more to this than what the eye sees, why he is so adamant about pushing this disaster. He’s not given Soc Security the same push, nor the Libby issue of a needed pardon. His support for loser Alberto Gonzales is also not plausible. What is really going on? For me, being a legal immigrant, I was given hell to accompany my husband ( a Soldier in the Army). I had to provide all kinds of medical papers, and x-rays before being even acknowledged in my application, although coming from Germany, I was fairly educated. What a bout these illegals? What about their proof of health, and financial stability as I had to provide?
Do you want a President Pelosi?
Hey George === Where’s The Fence????
Don’t be absurd.
I agree - he’s going to ruin this country. The republicans are counting on us little people forgetting this with the next election. I will not forget. And when we see the cost of social welfare programs exploding and bankrupting the country and lawyers paid by us to process the immigtation paperwork and gang members gaining citizenship we will all be reminded of our elected leaders’ folly.
This ‘stradegery’ has a Rovian twist to it.
Be patient.
Maybe, but I will fight the good fight nonetheless.
al-Harry Reid and President Jorge Bush working together to end cross-border traffic problems.
Border crossings must be made Safe, Easy and Subsidized.
It’s waiting for the passage of S.1348. Let’s not hold it up any longer.
You really are an idiot! "Racism" has nothing to do with the handing this country over to another country's culture and language. Smearing all of us that are against an unfettered alien invasion is a slimy liberal tactic.
So, how long have you been a slimy liberal? (I'd add idiot, but that would be redundant)
Illegal immigration is not about race. Why do you and President Bush want to make it so?
OOPS... I guess I spoke to soon in my last post to you. Here you are again accusing people who are against this bill of being racist. YOU and those like you are the ones who are turning this into an issue of RACE! These are not only Mexicans that are here illegally, yet you seem to think we all believe this is so. You talk about supporting the War on Terror, but you fail to realize that there are MANY Islamic radicals here in the U.S. ILLEGALLY!!!
If YOU really cared about the security of our country you would not be supporting a bill that will provide amnesty to MILLIONS of criminals — including FELONS and REPEAT OFFENDERS!!! It is no secret that Jihadists have used the lax Mexican border to come into this country. This IS about National Security. It is also about protecting the sovereignty of our nation, and President Bush is turning his back on his oath to our country to protect it.
As far as Illegal Immigrants becoming citizens and voting for Republicans??? It is YOU who keeps saying we are all racists, and it is people like you that perpetuate the myth that leads them to believe all the tripe that the Democrats trot out in regards to this issue. Also, I was wondering if you had seen where they discovered 300 illegal immigrants who had lied about citizenship and VOTED — and this was just in one small area of Texas where they were called for jury duty and admitted they were not citizens. There was a Democrat in California who urged illegal immigrants to vote in the elections there last year. This is a VERY serious problem and again has nothing to do with race. It DOES have to do with AGAIN with the security of our nation — if ANY person not here legally and not posessing the right to vote is voting in our elections then is that not putting our Republic in jeopardy by possibly allowing those people to elect representatives that do not stand for the best interests of OUR country?
I honestly can’t understand why you are so insistent on pushing this bill down our throats, and why you are so insistent on trashing those of us who are against this bill. What chip is on your shoulder? What axe are you trying to grind here, because it doesn’t seem to be rational on your part, unless you have something to gain personally from this bill passing — do you???
BTW: It would be interesting if you would actually respond to the things people post to you — I’m still waiting on a response from the posts I wrote to you over a week ago... But, don’t worry — I won’t hold my breath... I know that’s not your style to engage in any actual debate on this subject.
I am not sure what "problem" Mr. President is talking about. One problem is that our borders are open; they have been open at least since 1986 when President Reagan signed an amnesty bill to solve the problem once and for all. But we failed to secure our borders.
President Bush should be talking about a simple, single-purpose immigration Bill to secure our borders with adequate follow-up funding to stop the leak. That is what this country needs. That is what the people want. Then, after we have demonstrated the will to secure our borders, we can then and only then take the time needed to rework our immigration policy, including how best to deal with illegals in a just and compassionate manner, including nationalization of the English language. We can save billions in costs of dealing with multiple languages that would more than pay for our border security.
The President should put together a study group that will take the time to objectively assess the scope and scale of the problems with illegal aliens and come up with a meaningful policy for dealing with those already here. What is wrong with that idea?
That's the problem in a nutshell. This situation is being demanded by a special interest that is running the show. Bush-if he even understands what the hell he's doing-doesn't give a chit about immigration. He's carrying somebody else's water here.
It's becoming more and more obvious that special interests really run our country and that Bush and the rest of our elected fools are simply puppets.
Who cares about the GOP if America is destroyed?
Regardless, these people are never going to vote republican. Pander all you want, the overwhelming majority of illegal aliens in this country will vote democrat if they become citizens.
Just like in November 2006?
George Bush is that you? Are you doing your Bob Dole impression?
When something like only 21% of Americans support this bill, you know it's about something a little more than race.
Do you honestly believe this? Recent polling data suggests that greater than 70% of Americans are against this bill. Do you really believe that 70% of Americans are racist against Mexicans? If so, you are blinded by some personal prejudice or resentment of your own, and I would honestly urge you to explore this within yourself before making global accusations. If there has been any ‘racism’ or ill-conceived nationalism in this debate it has most vociferously come from those Hispanic nationals who insist that “the southwest is rightfully ours”, who flout our immigration laws, and who are vocal supporters of “Aztlan”. If you really care about the Mexican people then you ought to be spending some of your energy supporting major change within the corrupt political system of Mexico that has failed to support and allow a nation of very bright and industrious people from advancing societally and economically nearly as much as they should. Why can't a country with large oil reserves and tons of other natural resources support an economy that can employ it's own populace?
I have 2 words for you:
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
Has Bush urged others...say Asians and Middle Easterners...to also lobby hard?
Take a look through the first page or two of B. Chezwick’s posts and count how many times he talks about the federal government using force on American citizens.
If General Patton were alive,he’d be ordering certain people marched to the nearest wall and shot.
Just what is the cause that you are willing to fight for?I’m a little curious.
