Ed Jew ignores city attorney's probe deadline

San Francisco Supervisor Ed Jew ignored the city attorney's deadline Friday to agree to be interviewed by investigators and to submit additional proof he lives in the Sunset District, maintaining that his hands are tied by the overlapping investigations of which he has become a target.

Jew, who took office in December, is under scrutiny by the city attorney over whether he meets residency requirements to hold his District 4 supervisor's seat. The city attorney gave Jew two extensions -- the last expired Friday -- to prove he lives in a 28th Avenue home, owned by his father, where Jew claims to have resided since before he ran in the 2006 election for supervisor.

Jew also is being prosecuted by District Attorney Kamala Harris on felony perjury and election law charges for allegedly lying under oath and falsifying paperwork when he claimed in candidacy papers that he lived in the 28th Avenue house. The FBI, meanwhile, is looking into a $40,000 cash payment Jew is suspected of soliciting or extorting from businessmen in the Sunset.

In a letter to Chief Deputy City Attorney Therese Stewart on Friday, Jew's lawyer Steven Gruel said the filing of the felony charges against Jew on Tuesday by the district attorney placed the supervisor in a catch-22 situation, wherein the supervisor's statements to the city attorney's office could be used against him in the criminal case.

Gruel urged Stewart to suspend the city attorney's investigation until the criminal case is concluded.
